The Ethicon Surgical Care business combines products and services of two market leading legacy companies, both with long histories of medical innovation. Overall Responsibilities In this unique role, the candidate will be responsible for interfacing with R&D in the review of bench top models and test methods used for product development. Preclinical non-tissue model development, mathematical modeling, ex-vivo and in-vivo modeling of device mechanics along with failure mode analysis, and physiological test systems to evaluate the performance of medical devices in Biosurgery (i.e. synthetic and biologic glues and sealants) and Ethicon Products (i.e. needles, sutures, and mesh products), Energy, Endomechanical, Advanced Imaging, and NeuWave. As a member of the Advanced Modeling Group the successful candidate will have the opportunity to interface with R&D, medical affairs, medical safety, marketing, and preclinical peers to help drive the next generation of medical devices. Duties & Responsibilities Under limited supervision and in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws/regulations and Corporate Johnson & Johnson, procedures and guidelines, the candidate for this position will be responsible for: Strategic and tactical aspects of the preclinical advanced modeling group Design non-tissue, ex-vivo, and in-vivo models to quantify the physical forces that impact performance. Characterization of biological tissues. Collaboration with internal and external partners in modeling physiological systems. Design and develop experimental systems and test methods for the evaluation of new and existing medical devices. Develop the simulation code for mathematical modeling Develop and write test methods and protocols for non-tissue, ex-vivo, and in-vivo studies. Execute studies for the assessment of prototypes and final design products. Interface with preclinical vets for the transfer of models to the operations group. Analyze and interpret data to formulate conclusions and provide solutions to the next step in development. Perform other duties assigned as needed applying engineering principles to understand the physics and biophysics of device performance and the interacting anatomy and physiology of animal models. Author/present manuscripts, posters, or other professional publications as appropriate. Responsible for communicating business related issues or opportunities to next management level. Responsible for ensuring personal and Company compliance with all Federal, State, local and Company regulations, policies, and procedure. Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally and influence a program direction is required Extensive knowledge of Preclinical Research is required. Excellent communication skills – written/oral/listening Ability to clearly document and communicate plans and results. Knowledge in the following areas is preferred: Large animal general surgery Transducer technology and systems System physiology Vascular mechanics Image analysis SolidWorks design 3D Modeling and Printing Data acquisition systems Lead and work effectively in a team-oriented environment that embraces ownership and accountability for innovation, change, risk, and flexibility Qualifications Education & Required Skills/Experiences: A Bachelor’s of Science in electrical, mechanical, or biomedical engineering with at least (6) years of relevant experience is required Ability to clearly document and communicate plans and results Excellent communication skills – written/oral/listening Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally and influence a program direction Preferred Skills/Experiences: An MS in biomedical engineering is preferred. A PhD in biomedical engineering is preferred. Previous experience in product development research from an integrated physiology perspective, mechanical testing/materials characterization Previous experience in soft tissue mechanics Experience in the design and development of ex vivo/in vivo test methods to support medical research Experience in applying scientific and engineering principles to concept research of new and existing medical devices and soft tissue modeling.
