Job Description

The Johnson & Johnson Law Department is recruiting for a Patent Paralegal for the pharmaceutical sector to be located at the Johnson & Johnson Janssen Corporation facility located in La Jolla, California.  

Janssen is a recognized leader in providing physicians with breakthrough treatment solutions for a variety of diseases including infectious diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, immunologic and neuroscience disorders.

The Patent Paralegal independently supports the patent attorney(s) in all phases of the patent acquisition process, including the preparation and electronic filing of patent application filing papers, restriction requirements, information disclosure statements, responses to office actions, issue fee payments, application and patent file wrapper reviews and certificates of correction. Key responsibilities include: independent generation of patent application forms for dockets assigned to attorneys located in our California pharmaceutical sector locations; electronic filing of correspondence with the USPTO; uploading of patent forms to the J&J docketing system; collection, compilation and management of all information to be submitted to the USPTO during patent prosecution and arrangement of the information in USPTO IDS format; management of the attorney docket including scheduling regular docket reviews with the assigned patent attorneys to assure coordination of foreign agent correspondence and assistance with attorney instruction to foreign agents, correcting applications, filing receipts and other formal issues; reviewing application files throughout the prosecution process and following J&J checklists, contacting USPTO as necessary to confirm the status of application or resolve issues with submissions, checking the USPTO rules and procedures (MPEP, CFR) and communicating them to the relevant attorneys and coordinating with the J&J patent department in New Jersey.



Other responsibilities include conducting searches as outlined by patent attorneys, scheduling meetings, presentation generation support, assisting in organizing competitive intellectual property records and competitive art searches, arranging travel reservations and handling attorney expense reports. 



• A minimum of an Associate’s Degree or a Paralegal certificate/license is required, and Bachelor’s Degree is a plus. 
• A minimum of 4 years full-time experience as a patent paralegal working with the generation, filing and management of patent applications on a daily basis is required.  
• Proficiency with PAIR, private PAIR, First to File, and patent database searching, such as, Thompson Innovation database searching, is required.  
• The ability to work independently, maintain a high degree of confidentiality and interface effectively with inventors, attorneys, other patent professionals and the USPTO is required.  
• The candidate is required to work core hours at their designated work site and to attend meetings as required by their manager during core business hours.  
• A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail, and excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are required.  
• The ability to set priorities and work under pressure to meet time deadlines is required.  
• Database systems experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook and Excel) is required.
