We have an opening for a Computational Modeler Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in polymer rheology. You will actively participate in a research group of material scientists and mechanical engineers optimizing DIW-based additive manufacturing processes at the microscale to create printed materials with desired mechanical and aging properties. Research focus is on simulating the flow of ink in DIW nozzles (shear thinning/banding, particle dispersion, interaction with walls), and the modeling of long-term material degradation for lifetime assessment. This position is in the Computational Chemistry group of the Materials Science Division.
Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.
In this roleyou will
- Contribute to the conception, design, and execution of computational modeling research to address defined problems in polymer and polymer-resin rheology and polymer aging.
- Collaborate with experimentalists and modelers to tackle complex multiscale, multi-physics problems in polymer science.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists both internal and external to the Laboratory.
- Present formal and informal overviews of research progress at regular meetings.
- Document research; write and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community, at working group meetings, and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ph.D. in Polymer Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
- Experience with computer simulation of polymers, either particle-based or continuum methods.
- Experience with developing multi-scale models (atomistic, mesoscale/bead-spring, continuum) of polymer systems including, for example, melts, thermoplastics, networks, and composite materials.
- Knowledge of polymer physics, from, for example, extensive coursework in polymer physics and mechanics, and relevant research publications.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills necessary to deliver presentations and prepare written reports on time.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with the desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Qualifications We Desire
- Familiarity with LAMMPS.
- Experience in computing viscoelastic response of polymer systems.
- Experience working in GPU- and Linux-based HPC environment.
