We have multiple openings for an Environment Health & Safety Data Manager in the Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate, supporting the Technical Services Department (TSD). Within TSD this position will support soil sampling and environmental monitoring activities for construction and demolition projects at LLNL. You will conduct comprehensive assessments of key processes, identify improvements for environmental monitoring data functions, respond to stakeholder inquiries, and interact with clients and technical support staff to analyze data flow, reporting capabilities and implement process improvements. This individual will interact with ES&H environmental analysts, on-site and off-site environmental laboratories and environmental professionals in other LLNL organization.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Under minimal guidance perform sample data processing, extraction, reporting, and analyses to detect anomalies, troubleshoot data and workflow problems, and work with available resources, stakeholders, and systems to improve data delivery and integrity.
  • Perform data extraction and analyses using query tools for regulatory reporting.
  • Independently maintain and modify field tracking forms, chain of custody forms, and sampling plans in coordination with environmental analysts and technicians.
  • Extract, evaluate, and prepare relevant information for incorporation in related procedures and manuals; train users to query, obtain, and interpret standard and ad hoc reports.
  • Organize, log, verify, store, and manipulate complex analytical data to assure user access and data integrity.
  • Assess data flow and reporting capabilities for all environmental media including surface water, air particulate, air tritium, sewer, soil, vegetation, and others; identify and implement improvements for data delivery and integrity, interacting with stakeholders and technical staff.
  • Assist in archiving and electronic storage of environmental data and supporting documents.
  • Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Job Responsibilities at the E01.3

  • Represent ES&H TDS on multi-disciplinary teams to develop and/or re-develop data management tools.

  • Prepare customized data reports and data visualizations for environmental analysts in other ES&H organization.

  • Develop new complex data analytics and data visualization tools using Tableau, Jupyter Notebook, Python, or similar analysis tools.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant functional discipline or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with workflows related to processing environmental or public health related data (or equivalent).

  • Experience learning and applying custom and COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) computer software user interface systems for business processes.

  • Experience interacting with databases performing data extraction in support of custom/specialized reporting.

  • -Experience gathering user information, defining current business processes or workflows, and making recommendations for improvement.

  • Effective communication skills to interact professionally with others, as well as work effectively in a team environment.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment, multi-tasking and adjusting to changing priorities.

  • Willingness and ability to learn new responsibilities.

Additional Qualifications at the E01.3 Level

  • Deep technical knowledge of data management practices, associated software applications and related work processes, including data types, terminology, and database architecture.
  • Experience interacting with cross-disciplinary teams to design, develop and improve data analytics and business processes.
  • Experience in using SQL and/or data analytic/visualization tools to query data and produce technical reports. Experience with data management – customer model to support data user needs.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in data science or related field.
  • Extensive experience in environmental data management programs.
  • Experience working in accordance with and developing formal work instructions / procedures.

Position Information

This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years.
