We have an opening for a nationally recognized Lead Climate Scientist to spearhead a new Climate Impacts and Resilience Initiative. You will focus on the quality, robustness, and relevance of LLNL’s climate science, security, and resilience efforts, interact with technical leaders and senior managers, and serve as the primary interface between the climate program and other LLNL discipline and program organizations, as well as the director’s office. You will also provide technical, operational, and administrative supervision and leadership for scientists and postdoctoral researchers supporting research on the impacts of climate change and adaptation, with a particular emphasis on the implications for national security and energy infrastructure. This position is in the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate.
In this role you will
Collaborate with LLNL climate scientists to further develop LLNL’s vision and strategic plan for Climate Resilience.
Build a research portfolio in Climate Resilience by ensuring technical excellence on currently funded efforts and developing competitive research proposals for internal and external funding sources.
Represent LLNL’s capabilities in Climate Resilience related science and applications to Laboratory senior management and external sponsors including national security sponsors.
Serve as the point-of-contact for LLNL’s efforts to provide actionable climate information to a broad array of end-users.
Serve as a subject matter expert in climate change and related impacts, providing technical guidance, leadership, and supervision for scientists and engineers in the Atmospheric Earth and Energy Division (AEED), other divisions within PLS and other directorates such as Global Security and Computation.
Provide technical, operational, and administrative supervision and leadership for a group of scientists and postdoctoral researchers supporting Climate Resilience related science and applications. This includes performance management activities.
Collaborate with PLS, Global Security and Computing Program managers to ensure that programmatic staffing needs are met, and Climate Resilience staff are well-positioned for available programmatic assignments. This includes recruiting, coaching, and mentoring new employees, nurturing existing LLNL collaborations, and initiating new partnerships.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Ability to secure and maintain DOE Q-level and SCI security clearances, which require U.S. Citizenship.
Ph.D. in Meteorology, Oceanography, Engineering, Environmental Science or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Extensive experience and subject matter expertise in an area of modeling and/or experimental approaches supporting Climate Change Impacts analysis and Adaptation applications.
Expert knowledge of climate change mitigation and an appreciation for the challenges and opportunities faced by practitioners of this arena.
Expert and broad knowledge of climate science.
Expert project management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and work efficiently and effectively under deadlines.
Extensive experience in developing new scientific programs and research proposals, developing relationships, and working with national security sponsors in Climate Resilience related science and applications for internal and external funding.
Advanced leadership skills and experience leading, supervising, and mentoring others, while building highly complex interdisciplinary teams in a technical environment.
Expert written and verbal communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills, necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
Qualifications We Desire
Working knowledge of the DOE Office of Science and other DOE program offices.
Familiarity with the applications of artificial intelligence and machining learning methods to climate science.
Understanding of LLNL’s research scope and mission.
