We have an opening for a Rigger/Crane Operator to support the Maintenance Division of the Infrastructure Maintenance & Operations Department. You will perform specialized journey level rigging services to include rigging, crane operation, lifting and moving machinery, scientific apparatus, and structure components.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this roleyou will
- Perform site wide journey-level Rigger duties for LLNL facilities.
- Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, rollers, lifts, dollies, chain falls, stair climbers, tug bars and slings of various types.
- Assist trade workers from other shops by lifting and moving heavy objects with forklift and other rigging equipment using techniques of the rigger trade.
- Operate commercial and non-commercial motor vehicles for transportation of tools and materials.
- Perform daily rigging gear inspections.
- Perform load evaluation, estimate weights, locate center of gravity, and lifting points.
- Prepare standard reports, daily equipment inspections documents, and deficiency forms using computers and associated software.
- Perform all assignment in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the 861.2level
- Perform site wide rigger duties of a Rigger 1 and specialized rigger tasks.
- Work on moderate to complex assignments.
- Operate mobile cranes to move equipment and devise proper methods to move same using techniques of the rigger trade.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; and completion of apprentice training program and/or basic journey-level work experience in the applicable trades using hoisting/rigging.
- Basic journey level skills, knowledge and abilities in the rigger trade including load angles and weight calculations.
- Proficient use of hand and power tools of the trade for purposes of job layouts and equipment installations.
- Ability to calculate physical forces from levers, incline planes, wheels, and the center of gravity of loads.
- Ability to identify types of rigging hardware to determine their capacities and intended useability to determine sling angle stress and bridle sling ratings.
- Basic computer skills necessary to communicate, report time and complete web-based training, standard forms, and reports.
- Basic knowledge of, and ability to apply, ES&H and OSHA laws and regulations.
- Effective customer service and communication skills and the ability to work independently or as a team member, interfacing well with others.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class A California Driver's License.
- Ability to perform in adverse conditions consistent with a field environment.
- Physical strength, mobility, and endurance consistent with the wearing and use of protective clothing and equipment.
- Ability to work scheduled and emergency overtime.
- Ability to travel to Site 300 in Tracy, California.
Additional qualifications at the 861.2 level
- Intermediate to advanced journey level skills, knowledge and abilities in the professional rigger trade including common rigging practices, hardware, load angles, calculations, boom angles, and radius.
- Experience or formal training to perform specialized rigger tasks.
- Basic knowledge of related trades, as needed, to provide seamless product/service results.

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).
