    Position summary

    ith a strong background in editorial decision making and daily news reporting, you will source, assign to reporters, write, and publish fast turnaround news articles geared to a legal audience. Candidate must be a self-starter comfortable with a fast paced, deadline driven environment.

    Key responsibilities

    The Assistant Managing Editor will participate in all aspects of producing daily news content, including:

    • Researching, assigning, writing, and publishing news stories about the Canadian legal industry, including court decisions, court filings, legislative announcements and other industry news, in specifically targeted areas of practice.

    • Manage a team of legal wire reporters primarily focused on daily coverage of corporate-commercial litigation and business law.

    • Report to the managing editor, and provide coverage for managing editor as needed, including running editorial meetings, assigning stories, and final review and publishing of news content.

    Requirements

    • Degree in journalism

    • Excellent reporting and writing skills

    • Experience writing about the Canadian legal industry

    • Proven sound editorial judgment

    • Excellent communication skills, highly organized and self-motivated

    • Able to handle multiple priorities in a tight, deadline-oriented environment

    • Previous newsroom experience, and experience managing a newsroom team of 5 or more

    • Experience in using content management systems is an asset

    • Proven ability to work independently, on tight deadlines, with a high attention to detail

    • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with team to ensure quality daily production of news content

    • Ability to use variety of news research tools efficiently, including web scrapping technology to source news story ideas (including court decisions, announcements)

    • Ability to lead process improvement initiatives within team and leverage technology to continuously improve quality and efficiency of news idea sourcing

    • Legal or business background is an asset

    • Sound knowledge of Canadian Press style
