SUMMARY
This position is responsible for providing the Employee Health & Benefits (EH&B) practice and its clients and prospects with compliance assistance, education, and training with respect to federal, state, and local health and welfare benefits law. A Compliance Consultant in the Compliance Center of Excellence (COE) will address a wide variety of ad hoc compliance questions, write and peer review articles and presentations, participate in client seminars and other public speaking engagements, and participate in the development of intellectual capital for use by Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA). This position can be located anywhere in the U.S.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Function as resource to the EH&B practice team by reviewing and responding to ad hoc request for compliance assistance as directed.
- Prepare intellectual capital including articles, alerts, presentations, guides, and other material as needed.
- Deliver presentations and participate in public speaking engagements as needed.
- Review written material including plan documents, summary plan descriptions, and contracts as necessary.
- Attend Compliance COE and EH&B meetings as scheduled.
- Participate in Compliance COE and EH&B compliance calls and committees.
- Assist MMA and the Compliance COE with brand building and recognition.
- Performs additional responsibilities or special projects as assigned and necessary to support business objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree (BA/BS); or equivalent combination of education and training.
- Law Degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- License to practice law in good standing in at least one state.
- 3-6 years' experience as an attorney, specializing in health and welfare benefits law including ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, and health care reform.
- Proven ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Proficient in reading, analyzing and interpreting technical procedures and periodicals. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and employees, and on a one-on-one basis.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instruction.
- Ability to learn and understand the fundamentals of employer-provided group health and fringe benefit programs.
- Effective time management skills including the ability to prioritize and organize workload.
- Ability to work effectively on a team and independently under general supervision.
- Strong relationship builder and partner to the business.
- Must be able to work remotely using VPN access from home or while traveling.
- Must be proficient using the Microsoft Windows platform and the following standard software programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, internet-based research and internet-based research systems (e.g. EBIA Checkpoint).
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Periods of heavy workload requiring extended working hours.
- While performing the duties of this position the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to exert negligible physical effort continuously; up to 10 pounds.
- Minimal travel will be required.
