Position summary

The Associate Analyst will be part of the Utilities/Infrastructure team within Project and Infrastructure Finance Group and conduct comprehensive analysis on an assigned portfolio of electric and gas utilities in the UK. In conducting credit analysis for these portfolios, transactions or credit reviews, you will actively participate in rating committee discussions and interact with issuers and other market participants, in collaboration with Lead Analysts. This role is integral to Moody’s focus on ratings accuracy, research and market outreach.

Key Responsibilities

Portfolio Management

Examples of analytical work produced include:

  • Working with Lead Analysts on applying Moody’s methodologies and credit rating best practices.
  • Reviewing financial spreadsheets and charts, analyzing data and financial statements, building and updating financial forecasts, and writing analytical commentary.
  • Demonstrates the ability to understand and identify key factors that affect issuer credit ratings.
  • Monitors credit trends by following market developments, analyzing issuer reporting and engaging with issuers directly.
  • Active participation in rating committee meetings, including offering analysis and opinion.

Research & Outreach

  • Contributes to and builds research strategy, including idea generation.
  • Prepares first draft of core research, e.g. credit opinions, issuer and sector comments, press releases in collaboration with Lead Analysts.
  • Attends investor briefings and issuer meetings, supported by relevant presentation materials.

Operational

  • Operates applicable ratings and research systems and uses software specific to the rating group.
  • Familiarise with Moody’s processes, documentation standards and best practices.

  • Minimum graduate/second level degree (Masters, MBA, or equivalent qualifications) preferred,
  • Some experience in credit analysis, ideally within Utilities and Infrastructure sectors or experience from a recognized financial institution or an audit firm,
  • Good understanding of financial statements and accounting (e.g., through coursework, ACCA/CFA/CIMA or equivalent, or relevant work experience),
  • Strong modelling experience, including in regulated industries,
  • Demonstrated interest in the utilities and/or infrastructure industries,
  • Well-developed IT skills, including advanced Excel and PowerPoint,
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills,
  • Experience of working in a collaborative team environment,
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail,
  • Fluency in English is essential. Fluency in a second language such as Spanish, Italian, French, German, or North Germanic languages is beneficial,

The Ratings & Research Support department is responsible for producing analytical inputs in support of Moody’s Ratings and Research function. In addition, this department will provide support for surveillance requirements and partner with R&R to provide the necessary support for issuer and investor interactions.
