    Northrop Grumman, Strategic Space Systems Division, has an opening for a Principal Material Process Engineer OR Sr. Principal Material Process Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, California.

    The Sr. Principal Material Process Engineer will be part of the Composite and Non-Metallic Materials Engineering Team and is responsible for providing Materials and Processes support to aerospace hardware production, developing materials, processes, engineering specifications, and performing material evaluations and failure analyses. The successful candidate will collaborate with design engineering, manufacturing, QA, and customers to help deliver high quality, precision aerospace products. Our Senior Non-Metallic Materials Engineer will also investigate opportunities for improving existing materials, processes, equipment, adherence to specifications, and technology for attaining cost reduction and continuous improvement goals.

    The candidate shall also analyze, research, design and develop materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems. Apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes. Develop, analyze and apply material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications. Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems.
    • Apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications and fabrication and assembly processes.
    • Develop, analyze and apply material properties and design allowables, engineering processes and quality engineering specifications.
    • Material analysis and failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition of requirements and specifications.
    • Review and approval of subcontractor material processing procedures and Contract Data Requirements List (CDRL) submittals. May interface/serve as liaison to subcontractors.
    • Review and approval of supplier and vendor material processing procedures and products. May interface/serve as liaison to suppliers and vendors.
    • Aid with knowledge transfer and mentoring of junior engineers
    • Investigate opportunities for improving existing materials, processes, equipment, and technology.
    • Provide hands-on support to production operations to implement cost reduction and productivity improvement projects.
    • Support prototype trials, materials analysis and performance characterization.
    • Participate in development and improvement of strategic suppliers.

    This position's standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

    Basic Qualifications for Principal Material and Process Engineer (Level 3):

    • Bachelor's Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline plus 5 years of engineering experience OR Master's Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) plus 3 years of engineering experience.
    • Materials and Process Experience in Composite and Non-Metallic Materials, Special Processes Experience (including composite fabrication, test, coatings, structural bonding or NDT) OR Analytical Analysis Experience (SEM/EDX, FTIR, etc.)
    • Proven leadership experience on a project and/or team
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret Clearance or SCI Access

    Basic Qualifications for Principal Material and Process Engineer (Level 4):

    • Bachelor's Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline plus 9 years of engineering experience OR Master's Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) plus 7 years of engineering experience.
    • Materials and Process Experience in Composite and Non-Metallic Materials, Special Processes Experience (including composite fabrication, test, coatings, structural bonding or NDT) OR Analytical Analysis Experience (SEM/EDX, FTIR, etc.)
    • Proven leadership experience on a project and/or team
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret Clearance or SCI Access

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Master's degree in Materials Science & Engineering or Chemical Engineering
    • Active SCI clearance
    • Material selection and qualification experience
    • Composite, Metallurgical, and Contamination Control experience
    • Excellent 2-way communication skills (upward and downward)
    • Excellent presentation and writing skills
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interface and collaborate with all levels of employees, customers and leadership
    • Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% domestically and internationally

    Salary Range: $95,000 USD - $142,400 USD
    Salary Range 2: $117,700 USD - $176,500 USD

    Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
