Northrop Grumman Space Systems is currently looking for a Principal/Sr. Principal Propulsion Design Engineer to work in our Promontory, UT location.

Description & Responsibilities:
Perform analysis, design, or test of one or more moderately complex materials (including energetics), structural components, and control systems for propulsion systems. Apply engineering principles, industry standards, company standards and customer requirements to develop propulsion systems (electric, solid/liquid fuel rocket, air-breathing, thrusters) for application in launch vehicles, missile systems, and space mission systems. Coordinate strategy for developing and leveraging multi-disciplinary design, optimization, and analysis processes to support mission requirements. Define and coordinate the conduct of testing required to evaluate design work.

SLS GSE/TSE Design Engineering (Primary areas of responsibility)

  • Design/analysis/integration of new and modified heritage GSE items needed for SLS/evolution into BOLE due to changes in SLS architecture (i.e. to support changes in stage components and the extended SLS Booster aft exit cone)
  • New and modified design models/drawings
  • Process and refurbishment specifications as needed
  • Analysis/integration ranging from simple "hand calcs" to FEA
  • Creation of test plans for GSE demonstrations & associated reporting
  • Integration of GSE requirements and flight component IPTs
  • Internal and external ICD's and coordination's with new/modified GSE
  • Verification activities and associated new designs and developments
  • Customer interfaces - MSFC & KSC
  • Additional engineering evaluations of SLS heritage GSE selected to support future BOLE applications
  • GSE coordination with Stage Integration/Design

RSRMV/BOLE Static Test Integration Design Engineering (Secondary area of responsibility as required)

  • Test assembly drawings/support
  • Static test aft skirt insulation/TPS drawings
  • Static test aft skirt & duty cycle specifications
  • Test plan CTP level - including customer interfaces
  • Test objective identification and tracking
  • Test reports - Flash, Quick-look, Interim and Final Reports
  • Test Readiness Review engineering - NGC & MSFC reviews
  • Verification/certification plan support
  • Design review of static test motor process planning
  • Static test aft skirt processing and anomaly resolution
  • Involvement with GSE items related to static test processing (most notably the aft skirt)
  • Static Test MRB support

Competencies for Success:

  • Experience working engineering drawings and specifications to completion
  • Experience with structural analysis
  • Experience working with/across multiple teams/IPTs
  • Engineering changes (i.e. ePIC CR's, CN's, VLF's, Tabletop reviews, etc.)
  • Technical report writing and technical test plans

Skills Desired

  • Experience with NX solid modeling
  • FEA structural analysis (such as Ansys, etc.)
  • Good understanding of SLS Configuration Management system
  • Experience working requirements/verification activities
  • Customer support (IPT level presentations)
  • MRB Support

Education/Requirements

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and 5 years of experience, 3 with a MS
  • Consideration will be given to candidates with a BS or MS degree in other engineering disciplines with strong relevant experience
  • Position can be filled one level higher, BS and 9 years, MS with 7 years or PhD and 4 years of experience

Salary Range: $87,600 USD - $131,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $108,600 USD - $163,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
