    We are seeking an experimental scientist with a background in superconductivity, superconducting thin film materials, interfaces, and applications. The ideal candidate should have experience that includes some of the following:

    • Working knowledge in experimental design, materials research & development, condensed matter physics, thin film processing, and device fabrication.
    • Expertise in thin film characterization such as electrical transport, magnetometry, spectroscopy, scattering.
    • Cryogenic experimentation experience such as Quantum Design PPMS/ MPMS, dilution fridges, closed cycle refrigerators, dip probe systems, etc.
    • Experience analyzing data from techniques mentioned above.
    • Python and/or MATLAB experience

    Successful candidates are:

    • Excited about materials and interfaces in systems such as superconductors, , thin film heterostructures, and interfacial phenomena.
    • Willing to contribute to materials R&D discussions and cross-coordinate with other teams to identify, build, complete and measure the resulting experiments.
    • Motivated to learn new technologies and technical skills.
    • Able to identify problems, analyze data, and course correct experimental plans.
    • Enthusiastic about working in a collaborative group setting.

    This position requires work on site located at our Advanced Technology Lab (ATL) in Linthicum, Maryland.

    Your responsibilities:

    • Be a collaborative member of a team solving interesting questions.
    • Plan and carry out experiments to investigate superconducting materials.
    • Analyze and share findings with colleagues having a diverse scientific expertise.
    • Keep up to date with relevant superconducting materials in the literature.

    This position can be filled at the Principal level OR Sr. Principal level. Qualifications for both are listed below:

    Basic Qualifications for Principal Experimental Materials Physicist:

    • PhD in experimental physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field ( or will complete by December 2024); master's degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; Bachelor's Degree with 5 plus years of relevant professional experience.
    • Background in condensed matter physics, specifically: superconducting materials, thin film surfaces and interfaces
    • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS/SCI) with polygraph clearance per business requirements.

    Preferred Qualifications for Principal Experimental Materials Physicist:

    • PhD in experimental physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
    • Experience with condensed matter physics, specifically: superconducting materials, thin film surfaces and interfaces.
    • Experience conceiving experimental designs to understand properties of superconducting thin films and dielectrics.
    • Experience writing and contributing to version-controlled code in Python or MATLAB.
    • Active TS/SCI with polygraph clearance.

    Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Experimental Materials Physicist:

    • PhD in experimental physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field and 4 plus years of relevant professional experience; Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; Bachelor's Degree and 9 plus years of relevant professional experience
    • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS/SCI) with polygraph clearance per business requirements.

    Preferred Qualifications for Sr. Principal Experimental Materials Physicist:

    • PhD in experimental physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field
    • Expertise in condensed matter physics, specifically: superconducting materials, thin film surfaces and interfaces
    • Experience writing and contributing to version-controlled code in Python or MATLAB
    • Active TS/SCI with polygraph clearance.

    Salary Range: $123,900 - $185,900
    Salary Range 2: $153,600 - $230,400

    The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

    Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
