Position summary

We are looking for a driven and enthusiastic lead engineer interested in executing Northwestern Mutual’s Digital Experience Platform strategy. As a Lead Engineer for the Digital Experience Platform, you will work with a group of talented software engineers in evolving the digital platform that accelerates digital product teams across the enterprise through a common design system, catalog of experience APIs, and shared experiences. This role will focus on evolving the digital platform to continue to meet with needs of the experiences we support. This includes building composable components, defining integration patterns and building tools and utilities that support and empower engineers that allow them to deliver high quality software quickly. Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implements holistic solutions utilizing working relationships across the enterprise.
  • Designs, organizes, and executes high impact solutions across teams both within and outside their division.
  • Identifies and solves technical and operational problems; understands and recognizes broader impact across the division


  • Guides and influences others either internally or externally to adopt a different point of view


  • Clarifies objectives as well as removes obstacles and barriers that prevent the team from achieving results


  • Establishes, aggregates, and shares enterprise standards and best practices.
  • Mentors and guides junior engineers within respective division.
  • Ensures production stability, monitoring, and root cause analysis is executed for their products.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience

  • 6-8 years of professional experience required

  • 3-5+ years of experience working with modern engineering tools, languages and practices.

  • 2-5+ years of experience leading engineering teams including: 


  • Proven track record of successfully designing and delivering significant and impactful technology solutions.

  • Experience developing and leading solution delivery using agile methods.

  • Solid understanding of the organization’s primary domains and business functions.

  • Ability to successfully communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences in varying forms and levels of detail.

  • Expert for the organization in one or more technologies: JavaScript, Cloud Development

  • Successfully deals with ambiguity.

  • Recognized as the go-to expert within the division or department.

  • Ability to effectively communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences in varying forms and levels of detail.

  • Solid understanding of design patterns and architecture.

Ideal Skills to Succeed: 


  • NodeJS, React, Redux, ExpressJS

  • DevOps

  • Source control (preferably: git)

  • Containerization (preferably: Docker)

  • Container orchestration (preferably: Kubernetes)

  • Infrastructure scripting (preferably: Terraform)

  • Public cloud (preferably: AWS)
