Our Pharmaceutical Sciences function at Sandwich supports Pfizer’s early to late-stage portfolio, translating new chemical entities into commercial drug products.  Pharmaceutical Sciences at Sandwich is a fully integrated CMC capability that encompasses state of the art active pharmaceutical ingredient synthesis and drug product design as well as a cGMP manufacturing and clinical trials supply chain.  Within Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Drug Product Design department utilises expertise in materials science, formulation design and process understanding to deliver innovative new medicines.

Bring your passion

We are seeking an enthusiastic and innovative microscopist to work in a team environment, engaged in the characterisation of drug substances and drug products with a focus on pharmaceutical product and process development. 

You will predominantly be involved in a laboratory ‘hands-on’ role and you will contribute to planning, generating, and delivering high quality experimental work and data to ensure the timely progression of new products in Pfizer’s portfolio.

Over time you will develop into an in-house subject matter expert with a world-class understanding of forensic science and pharmaceutical microscopy.

Role Responsibilities

  • Utilisation of analytical microscopy and spectroscopy to support the development of solid and liquid drug products, including the identification of particulate matter in raw materials, packaging components and solid and liquid drug products.
  • Utilisation of analytical microscopy to deliver clear insights and understanding of the structures of powders and other pharmaceutical materials to interpret and explain atypical behaviour.
  • Evaluating and interpreting analytical data and reporting results through presentations and technical reports, especially the translation of scientific output and technical content into a language understood by a wider, non-expert customer base.
  • Ensuring accurate, timely entries are made into electronic laboratory notebook system according to accepted good practices. 
  • Being an ‘instrument owner’ and having responsibility for equipment availability, training, calibration, and maintenance schedules according to local procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with appropriate documentation (e.g., SOPs, instruction manuals, risk assessments, etc.) so that all experimental activities are conducted in accordance with approved safety and quality procedures.
  • Ensuring safe working practices are adhered to and maintained, both in own and others’ work.

Qualifications

  • Graduate in pharmaceutical or allied sciences i.e., first degree in pharmacy, pharmaceutical science / technology, chemistry, chemical engineering, life sciences.
  • An in-depth understanding of light microscopy techniques applied to the characterisation of APIs, excipients, and dosage forms.
  • Technical ability in the application of light microscopy, for the physical and chemical characterisation and identification of particulate matter in a wide range of APIs, excipients, dosage forms and packaging components.
  • Technical ability in the application of scanning electron microscopy and knowledge of X‑ray microanalysis for the examination and characterisation of a wide range of pharmaceutical materials.
  • Proficiency in the identification of organic materials using spectroscopic techniques e.g., infrared spectroscopy.
  • Adept at the preparation of a wide range of specimens for analysis.  
  • Experience in self-driven experimental plans with proven impactful outputs.
