Job Summary

As a Substation Engineering Staff Engineer at PSEGLI, you will be part of the team responsible for performing the engineering, design, construction and project management assistance on large-scale electric substation projects.

Job Responsibilities

Include but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical expertise and support to operations, project management, planning, power, marketing/sales departments, and as well as external customers in support of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Transmission & Distribution system.

  • Evaluate the application and use of materials, equipment and new technologies for LIPA's electrical substations.

  • Provide engineering services for construction/upgrade of electric substations and related facilities based upon reliability and economy with consideration to operations, economics, safety and maintenance requirements.

  • Develop material, engineering design, construction specifications/associated drawings, and standards as required for successful completion of assigned projects.

  • Develop, review and revise standards as a result of recommendations by industry associations (e.g. IEEE, EEI, ANSI, etc.) related to state of the art materials and engineering/operating methods.

  • Work with internal and external organizations/customers to ensure prudent engineering solutions are undertaken to special engineering and construction projects.

  • Perform budget/project cost estimates, develop project justifications, and participate in root cause analysis, special engineering studies, investigations and calculations as required.

  • Represent the department, LIPA, and company, at regulatory, community and industry meetings.

  • Review Transmission Independent Power Producers (HVDC, Statcoms, Synchronous generation, renewable energy, battery storage) interconnect drawings for compliance with LIPA transmission interconnection standards.

  • Review Distribution Interconnections Design for compliance with LIPA distribution interconnection standards.

  • System Emergencies - Develop temporary designs for the interconnection of mobile generation, mobile switchgear and mobile transformers.

  • Conduct studies for lightning and surge protection.

  • Conduct soil resistivity measurements and grounding studies for new substations.

  • Update drawings to incorporate field changes and contribute to PSEGLI asset and document retention systems.

  • Participation in Emergency Restoration efforts as needed.

  • Contribute all details of time accounting to Workplan efforts, including expense and capital time.

Job Specific Qualifications

Required:

  • B.S. in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical)

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant engineering experience in electric utility and familiarity with transmission and distribution systems

  • Knowledge of substation equipment

  • Working knowledge of applicable codes (ANSI, IEEE, ASTM, NEC, NESC, etc related to electric transmission system engineering, design and opera on. Familiarity with Occupational Safety Health Act (OSHA) guidelines.

  • Familiarity with AutoCad or other drafting application

  • Experience with using Microsoft Office computer programs such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Experience interfacing with other engineering disciplines, construction and Project Management personnel.

  • Demonstrate effective planning, organization, problem-solving and decision-making skills

  • Must be adaptable and results-oriented with strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated effective inter personal skills, leadership skills, professionalism and customer/client experience focus

  • A valid US driver's license with a safe and satisfactory driving history
