The Challenge

As a Staff Software Engineer on the XM Discover Platform team, you will be collaborating with other progressive engineers to bring our software to the next levels of scalability, performance, security, and functionality.  This stack processes very large amounts of free-form data using a variety of technologies such as Java, Go, Elastic, Kafka, Spring, Docker, Kubernetes, Postgres, Jenkins, Ansible, EKS, and others.  You will have strong influence on design and implementation, and will be a valuable mentor to other engineers in the organization.

A Day in the Life

• Design new features in close collaboration with product owners 
• Optimize, secure, and harden existing code, components, and systems
• Improve existing software development processes
• Take a high-importance project and run with it
• Collaborate with tech support and specialists to debug and resolve important issues
• Coordinate work across multiple teams to achieve a great outcome
• Do research spikes on key technologies
• Work closely with architects across the organization to ensure long-term viability of your solutions
• Undertake large, multi-quarter development efforts that have significant impact on our business
• Dig into automated test suites with our SDETs to ensure efficient continuous integration and deployment
• Contributing valuable and helpful ideas during planning, reviews, retros, and scrums
• Mentoring other engineers

Expectations for Success

• High degree of curiosity, and interest in continuously learning and teaching
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field
• 8 - 12+ years of commercial software engineering experience
• Experience with distributed systems and horizontally scalable databases like Elastic
• Confident with standard software engineering methodologies (e.g. unit testing, code reviews) and tooling (e.g. version control)
• Skilled in selection of design patterns to simplify solutions to complex problems
• Effective and persuasive communication, driving consensus among engineers
• Experience leading projects spanning multiple quarters or years including architectural design through implementation
