Role Overview:

The Technology & Engineering organization is comprised of the global engineering function, several focused centers of expertise, and our advanced Research & Development lab – the Research Center. By combining a passion for science with precision engineering, we create smart, sustainable solutions that prove we can do the big things the right way.

The Additive Manufacturing Process and Capability Center (AMPCC) encompasses a critical mass of Additive Manufacturing process and industrialization experts, the necessary equipment, and develops the strategic collaborations needed to rapidly mature the technology and manufacturing readiness of Additive.  The aim of the Center is to accelerate the development and deployment of additive manufactured products and systems for our business units.

The Senior Additive Manufacturing Process Engineer will be responsible for one or more of the following activities as they relate to the AMPCC, including:

  • Develop advanced process parameters to enable complex geometries and enhanced material properties required to industrialize aerospace components

  • Investigate the effects of machine variability on build quality and properties of fabricated parts

  • Execute and oversee builds on various Additive Manufacturing machines

  • Develop and maintain Standard Work, Operation Sheets, and Process Sheets for equipment and processes used in Additive Manufacturing

  • Support the installation, commissioning, and operation of Additive Manufacturing equipment

  • Explore the capabilities of advanced tools and equipment to characterize machines and process space

  • Utilize, develop, and deploy novel sensing methods and data analysis schema to increase process stability and efficiency

  • Characterize fabricated parts to understand defects and mechanical properties

  • Monitor, troubleshoot and correct issues associated with process or equipment

  • Work closely with design engineers to optimize parts to leverage additive technology

  • Provide input on the Design Standards for new product development

  • Utilize data driven analysis to support root cause investigations

Qualifications & Competencies

The preferred candidate should have a strong understanding of engineering principles and hands on experience working with laboratory equipment.  Candidate must be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, collaborative team environment focused on innovation and have demonstrated both verbal and written communication skills including:

  • Strong presentation, planning, problem solving, organizational, project management and decision-making skills

  • Hands on experience operating, maintaining, and modifying metal laser powder-bed-fusion additive manufacturing equipment

  • Experience with software and tools used in Additive Manufacturing including CAD packages

  • Advanced mathematics and data analysis skills with an understanding of statistics

  • Scripting experience with Matlab, Python, VBA, JavaScript or similar

  • Basic understanding of low voltage sensors and control systems

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Highly self-motivated and able to execute tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Demonstrated ability to interface with all levels of management, customers, and suppliers

Education & Experience

A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience.

Preferred candidates for this position will have an MS in Mechanical, Chemical, Manufacturing Engineering or related technical field with a minimum 3 years of industrial experience.  A PhD with 3+ years of industrial experience is highly preferred.  A minimum 3.5 GPA is desirable.
