    Department Overview:

    Materials & Processes Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and inspiring individual to the lead the Materials Analysis & Characterization group within the Materials & Processes Engineering (MPE) department. The Materials Characterization manager drives a large team of sub-discipline managers, engineers and technicians to execute high value, application specific laboratory tests for production support, cost reduction & performance initiatives, field events, and new materials technology development. The manager will navigate a complex internal customer base with conflicting priorities, while ensuring department health is maintained in terms of personnel safety, lab infrastructure, proper personnel skills mix, individual proficiency development, resource availability and budget.

    The Materials Characterization manager is responsible for a variety techniques in the areas of Optical and Electron Microscopy, X-Ray & Scattering methods, Analytical Chemistry and other derivatives of these core techniques. Often the test applications are unique, and require an element of customization in sample preparation or method adaptation. The manager should be committed to continuous advanced methods development and pushing the state-of-the-art to support business needs. The manager will be dedicated to this initiative in part through building and maintaining collaborative relationships with a core set of partners at service vendors, universities and DoD / National labs. The manager will oversee, prioritize and direct resources for several dozen concurrent test activities. The Manager should additionally be committed to Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), Ethics, export compliance and continuous improvement using CORE tools.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Manage and direct the day-to-day activity of Engineers and Technicians
    • Set and communicate priorities for test activities and available resources
    • Maintain internal customer communications and schedule commitments
    • Develop and execute a longer term technical skill base and capital equipment strategy
    • Mentor and coach Characterization team members to foster technical, leadership, teaming or other personal development goals
    • Prepare Executive level briefings as required on high visibility test activities
    • 10% travel required

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science Engineering or similar discipline and 12+ years of relevant experience OR
    • An Advanced Degree in a related field and 10+ years of relevant experience
    • Prior supervisory experience
    • US Citizenship required due to government contracts

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Advanced Degree in Engineering and/or an MBA                                                                                                                                
    • Previous laboratory test and management experience
    • Team / project leadership
    • Strong communication, interpersonal and strategic planning skills
    • Microsoft Office Suite proficiency
