    Materials Characterization Engineer

    The Measurement Science Group at the Raytheon Technologies Research Center (RTRC) invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Materials Scientist / Engineer. The Measurement Science Group is a primary resource within Raytheon Technologies Corporation (RTX) to support technology development and pursue corrective actions for highly challenging technical problems in the areas of materials and processes spanning the entire product portfolio of the RTX business units.

    Role Responsibilities:

    • This individual will work on multi-disciplinary teams to develop and execute complex materials characterization and investigation plans. 
    • Communication of results and scientific interpretation is expected through preparation of professional technical reports and presentations. 
    • This individual may manage small to medium projects that require advanced knowledge of materials characterization instruments.
    • Frequently will work autonomously with limited oversight from the group manager.
    •  Occasionally will coach and review the work of less senior professionals and collaborate with others regarding policies, practices, and procedures. 

    Basic Requirements: 

    • Experience with a variety of materials characterization methods is required. 
    • Hands-on experience with at least several of the capabilities listed below in a professional environment is required.
    • Electron Microscopy (SEM, FIB, TEM)
    • Optical Microscopy and Image Analysis
    • Elemental Analysis (EDS, WDS)
    • X-ray Computed Tomography (CT)
    • Strong mindset focusing on identifying inefficiencies and driving process improvements.
    • High degree of enthusiasm for technology and an ability to learn quickly staying abreast of cutting-edge technology, industry leading techniques and other skill sets.
    • Communicate clearly and effectively with all levels of management, business development, researchers and clients.
    • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in fast-paced, team environment or independently with limited direction.
    • US Citizen or US Permanent Resident (Green Card) required.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Preferred candidate will demonstrate strong knowledge of materials processing, properties, and microstructure in addition to experience with failure analysis investigations is highly desired in all applicants. 
    • Significant experience with crystallography and diffraction techniques would be a beneficial skill set in meeting the technical mission of the RTRC Measurement Science Team.
    • Preferred candidate will be a highly motivated self-starter that is able to adapt and prioritize tasks. 

    Location:

    • East Hartford, CT- This is an on- site position and relocation is offered.

    Education:

    • A PhD or MS degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemistry or related field with a minimum of 3 years’ experience preferred.

    Typically requires:

    • A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years' experience.

    Engineering/Other Technical Positions:

    • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
