    Collins Aerospace has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Software Engineer.  We’re looking for a passionate professional to accept a high level of responsibility within a fast-paced, dynamic environment.  We are looking for a Principal Software Product Engineer to support the Electric Power Systems Power Distribution product group. We are seeking an individual that has the capability to work collaboratively with a team, some local and some remote, to synthesize embedded flight software along with life cycle and certification evidence. The candidate will define, maintain, document, implement, and test software requirements for the secondary power distribution products.  Candidate must be able to work on a cross-functional support team and be able to communicate clearly in various review boards both internally & externally.

    You must be a commutable distance from Rockford, IL to work a hybrid schedule reporting on-site as needed.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Architect software frameworks and implement low level drivers and functions to support the framework functionality. 
    • Analyze the efficiency of compiled code on real time safety critical embedded systems platforms and make necessary improvements that go beyond high-level modeling and source code changes. 
    • Travel to support customer’s use of the development environments and associated tools. 
    • A working knowledge of aircraft control systems, crew alerting systems, and maintenance systems is a plus, but not required.
    • Fully implement the end-to-end functionality for the desired tool chain. 
    • Periodic travel may be required to other company sites to learn about their unique functionality requirements, implement changes to the framework and tools and train personnel on the usage of the development/tool environments.
    • Typical prototyping/development environments may utilize off-the-shelf hardware and operating systems such as Raspberry Pi and Linux.  Products will usually utilize dedicated embedded processors with ARM or RISC cores, and dedicated time/space partitioned real time operating systems. 
    • Depending upon individual demonstrated skills and performance, this position could ultimately evolve into a technical leadership role in safety critical, real time, embedded systems such as a Fellow or Systems Architect.

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR
    • Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience OR
    • In absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience is required
    • Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent Resident “Green Card” holder

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Full life cycle software development experience, requirements analysis through Hardware/Software integration & test

    • Software development processes

    • Knowledge of Collins secondary distribution products

    • Knowledge of Collins products and suppliers is a plus

    • Experience with Telelogic Synergy, Telelogic Rational DOORS, and Matlab

    • Experience in development of tools to extract data from development environments (e.g. Simulink), processing and manipulating extracted data, augmenting of extracted data and qualified verification tool development in accordance with RTCA DO-330 series guidance is highly desired. 

    • Experience in using SAE ARP-4754A and RTCA DO-178C for the development of safety critical software is highly desired.

    • Experience with off-the-shelf single board computers and ARINC-653 compliant operating systems is a plus.
