    This full-time onsite position is part of the Quality Engineering department within the Oxygen & PSU Systems organization located in Lenexa Kansas. This Chemical Inspection Lab Quality Engineer is responsible for receiving, inspecting, testing, and releasing constituent chemicals used by the Lenexa Collins Aerospace site, in support of production activities. This Chemical Inspection Lab Quality Engineer also supports production & manufacturing through troubleshooting of products, chemicals, component, and material issues that arise in production.

    We are seeking an individual to function as a subject matter expert working with Quality Engineers, production, as well as other portions of operations to ensure robust products are designed and built.  This Chemical Inspection Lab Quality Engineering position will also be responsible for developing and optimizing processing parameters for manufacturing, troubleshooting and root cause analysis, as well as providing direction on what materials manufacturers and technologies are preferred for Collins.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Receive constituent chemicals and other generator components.
    • Performs laboratory inspections and testing of chemical constituents in support of production products acceptance. Testing methods include titrations, ignition loss, particle size by sieve and laser diffraction, DSC-TGA, and others.
    • Collaborates with plant and engineering staff to identify possible chemical or materials engineering tool-related problems
    • Determines appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design.
    • Monitors material performance and evaluates material deterioration to ensure required specifications are met.
    • Performs material analyses that include, but are not limited to, failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications.
    • Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop best manufacturing process
    • May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of prior relevant experience OR
    • In absence of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience is required
    • Must be a U.S. Citizen
    • Must have or be capable of obtaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.  Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Technical background that supports fundamentals of engineering
    • Experience working with chemicals or in a lab environment preferred, but not required
