    Collins Aerospace is seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to support automated processes for fabrication of advanced composite structures used on commercial and military platforms.  The responsible engineer for this position will provide technical support on CNC machines and robots, including automated fiber placement, 5 & 6 axis mills, robotic cells, autoclaves and NDT. Technical support will focus on tasks improving machine uptime, quality, cycle time reduction, and cost reduction to support company goals.  The senior engineer hired for this position will be leading the Automation Team to utilize engineering fundamentals, lean manufacturing, and advanced methods to optimize machine OEE and maintenance for the site.  They will analyze machine data and make the appropriate changes to equipment, processes or documentation to solve problems, improve efficiency and part quality.

    *This is a production-oriented position operating in a manufacturing shop environment. **This position works the 2nd shift (3:00PM PST - 11:30PM PST) ***                                                                                                                                            

    Responsibilities

    • Provides technical floor support to troubleshoot CNC equipment and robots with minimal supervision. 

    • Maintain and update existing drawings/schematics.

    • Liaises closely with manufacturing, NC programming, quality and operations in the planning, design, development and utilization of NC programs

    • Creates work instructions for troubleshooting and technical process changes on equipment.

    • Train maintenance personnel and other Automation Engineers on technical procedures for critical equipment.

    • Establishes PM/TPM plans for all critical equipment.

    • Ensures critical spares are identified and stored onsite.

    • Implement and integrate external systems to improve existing automated equipment.

    • Improves machine uptime.

    • Ensures automated processes comply with Environmental Health & Safety and Quality requirements.

    • Investigates root cause of equipment failures or quality issues and develops go-forward approach.

    • Uses data analytics to track ongoing issues and to drive decisions on corrective actions.

    • Engages in problem solving initiatives & challenges status quo (e.g., root cause and corrective action investigations, OEE, machine downtime) 

    • Interfaces with fellow manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, engineering management, operations, maintenance personnel, shop floor personnel, and external vendors.

    • Participates and contributes on Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) and control build plans.  Identifies opportunities to influence changes to automated processes.

    • Participates in reviews for onboarding new automated equipment.

    • Participates in process improvement and continuous improvement activities.  Implements results of lean manufacturing initiatives. 

    • Implements process improvements by applying various engineering applications such as: robotics, automation and simulation.

    • Participates in digital manufacturing solutions with support from digital subject matter experts  

    • Will adhere to established procedures.     

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

    • Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience

    • Familiar with CNC/NC or robotic equipment.

    • Familiar with controls, systems, and operation of automated equipment.

    • Able to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, fluid drawings, technical reports, manuals, and work instructions for automated equipment.

    • Experiences in the adaptation of machine or equipment design to factory and production conditions.

    • Command knowledge and current experience using MS Office software.

    • Experienced with using Siemens, Fanuc, Allen Bradley, Kuka, etc. controllers.

    • Current use & knowledge of basics for computer and NC programming languages, i.e., Python, C++, VBA, C#, G-code,

    • Experienced in PLC/HMI programming, Drive tuning, etc.

    • Must be a U.S. Citizen

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with high-rate composites manufacturing methods (fiber placement, autoclaves, CNC machining, perforation, ultrasonic inspection, thermoplastics).

    • Experience with the commissioning of automated equipment                                                                                                                                                                                

    • Experience in robotic programming.  CAM software and teach pendant methods.

    • Familiar with Ingersoll Machine Tools, Zimmermann, Mazak, Anderson, Kuka and Fanuc robots.

    • Familiar with industrial standards OSHA, NFPA79, UL508, NFPA70

    • Safety integrated circuit design

    • Familiar with creating PLC programs with STL, SCL, Block, Ladder, etc.

    • Machining Networking; profibus, profinet, ethernet, ethercat, etc.

    • IOT, Smart Factory, Networking

    • CAD/CAM software

    • Hands-on experience with composites materials and processing, exhibiting strong fabrication and assembly skills (demonstrated through past work or experience via a student team, internship, or personal project).

    • Six Sigma – understanding level
