    Senior Electrical Engineer - RF Advanced Radio Systems (Hybrid or Onsite)

    Our goal is to create technologies that allow Collins Aerospace to differentiate our products from competitors and create new market opportunities through innovation. That means we need to take risks that, if successful, could lead to large rewards. We’re presently creating state-of-the-art micro-scale electromagnetic filters and other components with a proprietary additive manufacturing process for fabricating custom components for Radio Frequency (RF), microwave, and millimeter wave systems that push the state of the art for phased array antennas, radio communications, radar, and electronic warfare applications.

    Job Summary:

    Perform research & development in Radio Frequency (RF)/microwave/millimeter wave filter and component technologies. We are looking for an energetic, highly skilled engineer with a strong background in electromagnetics and finite element field solver tools such as Ansoft HFSS and Dassault Systems CST Studio Suite to work and study onsite in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with our internal proprietary fabrication process. Successful applicants will collaborate in the development of new electromagnetic component designs and fabrication process by carrying ideas from concept and planning through design, simulation, fabrication, test, model correlation, process iteration, process troubleshooting, component release, and technology transition into Collins Aerospace product lines. Additionally, this position involves collaboration with program management, our talented multidisciplinary team, and internal/external customers. The ideal applicant will have interest in learning applications of artificial intelligence to low-level hardware control and be willing to alternate between domains as work demands dictate.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Architect, design, simulate, layout, test, and troubleshoot component designs and fabrication process for communication, navigation, radar, and electronic warfare products (includes updates and clean sheet designs)
    • Direct layout for complex analog/RF/microwave/mmWave circuit card assemblies and package substrates
    • Create presentations explaining the approach and relevance to the design
    • Present technology concepts to customers/subcontractors in support of funding pursuits
    • Lead continuous improvement projects that result in new approaches and techniques to product development
    • Monitor performance of assigned project tasks (including technical, cost, schedule, design to cost, product integrity and manufacturability)
    • Define requirements for new designs and develop requirements specification
    • Perform architectural design including block diagram documentation, trade off studies and design reviews
    • Participate in collaborative efforts to creatively solve problems in innovative ways
    • Present technology concepts to customers/subcontractors in support of funding pursuits
    • Lead small project teams (2-4 individuals)
    • Train and oversee efforts of less experienced designers

    Key Competencies:

    • Demonstrated background with electromagnetic finite element field solver tools such as Ansoft HFSS, Dassault Systems CST Studio Suite, and/or AWR (“Microwave Office”)
    • Demonstrated ability to design, layout, and analyze using Computer Assisted Design (CAD) tools
    • Must be able to complete meaningful work in the absence of complete specifications and help create design requirements as a work in progress
    • Demonstrated ability to create mechanical geometry in CAD tools
    • Demonstrated ability to work with high frequency Vector Network Analyzers (VNA)
    • Demonstrates technical knowledge/expertise in multiple technologies
    • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems while integrating components or subassemblies
    • Demonstrated ability to design and capture electrical schematics and direct Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout
    • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, and data-driven decision-making
    • Experience in generating test plans, leading verification campaigns, writing test reports, and briefing customers
    • Excellent verbal/written communication and teamwork skills
    • Experience in identifying, communicating, and mitigating risks
    • Knowledgeable of industry trends within his/her domain
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a creative and practical problem-solving environments
    • Experience with using laboratory test equipment such as Vector Network Analyzers, Spectrum Analyzers, and Radio Frequency Signal Sources

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience designing high frequency electromagnetic filters
    • Experience in integrating RF components/assemblies with digital components including microprocessors, FPGAs, or programmable logic devices.
    • Experience in using transceiver components: filters, low-noise amplifiers, mixers, power amplifiers, power regulators/converters, switches, frequency synthesizers
    • Experience with additive manufacturing processes
    • Bid & proposal resulting in successful capture of funding
    • Experience with environmental effects testing
    • Experience with neural networks for numerical regression

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience OR In absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience is required 
    • Must be a U.S. Citizen
    • Must have or be capable of obtaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.  Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements
