    Collins Aerospace is hiring for a Senior Materials Engineer in Phoenix, AZ. The Senior Materials Engineer is responsible for managing and leading a team of engineers and technicians to ensure the quality and reliability of materials and processes used in aircraft evacuation components and systems. Some of the specific responsibilities of a senior materials engineer include: Researching and developing new materials and processes: This involves evaluating the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of materials and identifying new materials that can improve product performance, quality, weight, and costs. Designing and testing materials, processes, and products: The Senior Materials Engineer is responsible for designing, testing, and qualifying materials, processes, and products that meet TSO and SCD requirements.  The Senior Materials Engineer needs to be fully competent with material lab testing methods and processes and needs to fully support all the required documentation for testing and analyses.

    This position will be a hybrid position with a preference being at our Phoenix AZ facility; however, we are willing to consider other Collins approved facilities as well as relocation for the right candidate.

    Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products.

    Hybrid: Employees who are working in Hybrid roles will work regularly both onsite and offsite.  Ratio of time working onsite will be determined in partnership with your leader.

    Remote: Employees who are working in Remote roles will work primarily offsite (from home).  An employee may be expected to travel to the site location as needed.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Managing and overseeing projects: The Senior Materials Engineer is responsible for managing and overseeing projects from start to finish, ensuring that they are completed on time and within budget.
    • Collaborating with other engineers and departments: The Senior Materials Engineer must work as a team with other engineers, departments, our suppliers, and our customers. 
    • Conducting field investigation and analysis: The Senior Materials Engineer is responsible for field investigation on material performance issues, defining root causes and corrective actions. 
    • Ensuring compliance with regulations and standards: The Senior Materials Engineer is responsible to ensure that all materials and products meet the necessary regulatory and aerospace industry standards.
    • Mentoring junior engineers and technicians: The Senior Materials Engineer needs to mentor junior engineers and technicians to ensure that they are trained and develop into being fully competent in their roles and responsibilities.

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and 10+ years of years of material, chemical, mechanical, aerospace or systems engineering experience OR
    • Advanced Degree in a related STEM field and 7+ years of material, chemical, mechanical, aerospace or systems engineering experience.
    • 2+ years of working with Aerospace coded fabrics and materials.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working with Polyurethane coated fabrics, including materials, coating processes, and fabric testing, thermoplastics,
    • Knowledge of Aerospace materials and testing, including composites, and metal alloys.
    • Experienced with destructive testing and nondestructive inspection.
    • FTIR Spectroscopy, Testing and Analysis
