The Senior Durable Tooling Designer supports the design and manufacturing of durable tooling in their assigned area(s). Durable tooling includes machining fixtures, gauges, lifting devices, and material handling equipment to support Module Centers & Operations (MC&O). This position operates within the durable tooling value stream and serves as a liaison between internal stakeholders, Operational Excellence, OEM design services, and tooling OEMs. You will achieve day-to-day objectives that have significant impact on your assigned work area. You are a self-directed team player operating with minimal oversight and will be responsible for coaching, reviewing, and delegating work to lower-level professionals. Your expertise is important to us so we expect that you will provide measurable input to new products, processes, or standards in operational plans to implement business strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
Analyze tooling packages from Manufacturing Engineering to understand scope-of-work requirements.
Conduct concept and layout approval design reviews to support new and legacy programs.
Calculate cost estimates for tool design and manufacturing projects.
Complete export reviews for jurisdiction and classification of tool drawings, CAD files, and tooling commodities.
Validate supplier quotes meet technical requirements.
Participate and adhere to cross-training practices to broaden your expertise and overall business process capacity across the Module Centers & Operations (MC&O) organization.
Approve and release durable tooling reference packages for design, manufacturing, alteration, and/or repair.
Disposition supplier non-conformances for accept, reject, or repair and lead supplier to complete RRCA for all escapes.
Serve as a key voice in alterations to Pratt & Whitney’s Tool Design Manual and Control of Tooling standard work so that we infuse consistency across the execution work stream.
Comply with all tooling-related company procedures and processes.
Execute to Manufacturing Engineering Specifications and Manufacturing Engineering Instructions.
Candidate will be operationally and technically involved with any tool management software launches pursued by their assigned Module Center.
Must be able to review drawings and concepts and resolve producibility concerns.
Must be able work well in an integrated product development/design environment.
Candidate must possess a positive attitude and be able communicate well with staff and management.
Role requires 10%-20% travel.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) with 8+ years of prior relevant experience; OR
Advanced Degree with 5+ years of experience; OR
In absence of a degree, 12+ years of relevant experience is required
US Citizenship required due to government contracts
Experience in dimension and geometric tolerance of tooling prints and models
Proficient in NX or similar CAD software
Proficient in reading and interpreting 2-D drawings, 3-D CAD models, and GD&T (ASME Y14.5), ability to design for manufacturing simplicity, and a strong understanding of technical blueprints
Office 365 experience (e.g., Excel, Word, SharePoint, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.).
