    Job Description:

    Pratt & Whitney is seeking a highly motivated individual to support the manufacturing maturation of Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) turbine components. CMCs are an enabling material that increases the temperature capability of jet engine components. Through successful development and application of these materials, P&W will deliver engines that are more fuel efficient, lighter weight and more durable for commercial and military applications. This position is located in Carlsbad, CA.

    The Material Test Engineer will:

    • Develop and execute test methods and programs to measure mechanical properties of turbine engine materials and components
    • Design and conduct tests of all levels of scale and complexity, namely coupon, element and component testing
    • Act as an active member of several multi-functional problem-solving teams. During which you will work closely with engineers and associates of other disciplines including Design, Structures, Materials Development, Quality and Operations
    • Design and procure test fixtures as well as other required consumables and hardware
    • Communicate test results through presentations and technical reports
    • Create and employ novel instrumentation methodology to capture complex material behavior
    • Interact with both internal and external design and testing resources, universities, and service suppliers
    • Daily interaction, oversight and coordination of test activities and personnel
    • Create specifications and procure new or modified test equipment to meet test lab objectives

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Ceramic Engineering or equivalent
    • 5+ years of experience in Engineering or 3+ years with an advance degree
    • Applicants must be a U.S. person
    • Prior lab experience, ideally mechanical testing

    Desired Experience / Qualifications

    • Experience using universal test frames, either servo-hydraulic or electromechanical
    • Ability to process and analyze data as well as draw conclusions on results
    • Prior experience with failure analysis and ability to develop hypothesis on cause of failure
    • Familiar with data acquisition and instrumentation such as load cells, thermocouples, strain gages and extensometers
    • Basic understanding of analog and digital circuitry and experience soldering
    • Has used high temperature (2500F+) furnaces and conducted high temperature tests
    • Demonstrated ability to use CAD, perform structural analysis and create part definition
    • Experience with test system control software such as MTS TestSuite, WinCCS or Labview
    • A strong mechanical background with demonstrated hands-on ability
    • A working-knowledge of quality and process improvement tools such as Six Sigma and LEAN
    • Experience creating, reading and interpreting technical drawings
    • Ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships and exercise influence
    • Will be able to lead small teams to deliver outstanding results and overcome challenges
    • Knowledge and effective practice of Environmental, Health and Safety requirements
    • Knowledge and effective practice of aerospace quality practices like AS9100 and/or ISO9001

    Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance workers, as they are essential to the development of our engines.

    Candidates will learn more about role type and current site status throughout the recruiting process. For onsite and hybrid roles, commuting to and from the assigned site is the employee’s personal responsibility.

    The salary range for this role is 75,000 USD - 161,000 USD; however, Raytheon Technologies considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, education/training, and key skills.
