    Department Overview:

    The Pratt & Whitney Materials and Processes Engineering organization is seeking an engineer to support and execute Nickel Superalloy development, characterization, and production implementation for current and future jet engines. The engineer will serve customers across the enterprise (supply chain, engine programs, advanced technology) to plan, execute, and report on technical research and development related to Nickel Based Superalloys.

    Projects will range from engine safety, production stoppage, new/repair technology development, cost reduction, etc. where the engineer will work to understand customer requirements and execute development programs to meet and exceed business needs. The engineer will collaborate with other engineering disciplines, engineering management, and manufacturing customers as part of an Integrated Product Team to ensure successful transition and implementation of technology into Pratt & Whitney’s products.

    Key Responsibilities:

    To perform this role effectively, the candidate is expected to have a sound understanding of material science and the willingness to learn or expand on their knowledge of the physical metallurgy of Nickel based Superalloys and associated processes to develop and establish process/property relationships. The candidate is expected to be familiar with metal processing techniques such as: additive manufacturing, casting, forging, heat treatment, and conversion practices for Nickel Based Superalloys. Understanding of the capability of integrated computational modeling tools and methods is desired. Candidates will work as part of the cross functional team in Materials and Processes engineering to effectively support the development and support objectives of the organization.

    The candidate will interface with the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Energy (DOE), and NASA customers & lab technical community to seek, secure and execute contracts. Experience with program planning, cost estimation and scheduling in addition to meeting contractual requirements during execution is preferred. The candidate must be able to work effectively in a team environment and be highly motivated.  The candidate will be viewed as a technology leader with responsibilities that include bench-marking alloy technology and processes, securing funding, managing projects, and updating engineering standard work.

    10% Travel Requirement

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelors degree in Materials Science, Engineering, or Chemistry
    • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience OR 3+ years of relevant experience with an Advanced degree
    • US Citizenship or US Person required due to government contracts

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Fundamental understanding of material science and materials processing
    • Understanding of Welding and Additive Manufacturing of Nickel Based Superalloys
    • Familiarity of testing and characterization techniques for metallic materials
    • Understanding of effects of thermal mechanical processing of alloys and the impacts of oxidation and corrosion
    • Familiarity with continuous improvement tools: Six Sigma Green Belt
    • Flexibility to adapt to fluid customer requirements, priorities, and schedules.
    • Strong communication skills.
    • Self-motivation to help plan and execute required tasks and lead a team to achieve significant goals with little outside direction.
    • Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
