The position you are applying for is with Vertex Technology & Training Solutions which was formerly Raytheon Global Training & Logistics.  The Vertex Company acquired Raytheon Global Training & Logistics in December 2021.

Systems Safety Engineering is part of Systems Engineering that complements the technical activities required to deliver a project. It deals with engineering that influence the systems’ design and architecture in terms of performance, safety, supportability, testability, and cost consideration throughout the lifecycle of the product. Safety Engineering applies methods, standards, and techniques to provide clarification of system requirements to software, hardware, and test personnel to ensure design and architecture considerations are appropriately allocated to the system and horizontally integrated across the development teams. The Safety Engineering function supports systems engineering activities including trade studies, use case development, requirements definition and derivation, interface definition, and requirement validation and verification. As such, Systems Safety Engineers interface with the other engineering disciplines and logistics engineering functions to ensure integration and continuity in the design and development process.

Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance

As a member of the Engineering Team, expect a dynamic and demanding environment that values discipline, adherence to processes, and adding value to our customers through our respective disciplines.

This position serves as a member of the Vertex Engineering Team and supports various programs within a matrix management assignment as directed. Deliverables include, but not limited to, program plans, technical reports, schedules, basis of estimates for new pursuits, and analyses as required to substantiate architectural/design decisions and trade studies

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 5 years related experience in Systems Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field
  • U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance
  • Experience with System Safety Engineering practices as derived from MIL-STD-882, DO-178, and Joint Software Systems Safety Committee (JSSSC) Handbook.
  • Practical understanding and application of MIL-STD-1472 and MIL-STD-1474 
  • Ability to produce DoD required documentation, such as Safety Engineering Analysis Report, Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Report, Safety Assessment Report, Engineering Change Proposal System Safety Report, Waiver or Deviation System Safety Report (WDSSR), System Safety Program Progress Report, Health Hazard Assessment Report, Radiation Hazard Control Procedures, Safety Studies Report, Safety Studies Plan, Mishap Risk Assessment Report, and System Safety Program Plan

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in Aerospace, Automotive or Medical Device areas
  • Experience with DoD System Safety Programs
  • Strong written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal and project management skills, with the ability to manage a safety program and provide direction to supporting safety personnel
  • Understanding of Software Development Lifecycle (including Agile and/or Waterfall)
  • Experience with a wide application of technical theories and concepts related to system safety engineering
  • Knowledge of MIL-HDBK-454, MIL-STD-464, MIL-STD-1425, and AMCOM 385-17
  • Knowledge of MIL-STD-516 Air Worthiness Criteria, Human Systems Integration and SAE 6906
  • Experience Software System Safety Technical Review Panels (SSSTRP) or Software Materiel Release activities
  • Experience developing proposals and basis of estimates
  • Master’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of relevant experience OR in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience will be considered.
