The RTX Technology Research Center (RTRC) is seeking a highly motivated individual for the position of Lead Toolmaker. The candidate will join the Prototyping Team which specializes in the manufacture of prototype and test rig hardware for internal and external research programs across a variety of technical areas including combustion, electrification, heat transfer, and manufacturing, amongst many others. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and execution of manufacturing plans for complex hardware and systems which push the boundaries of technology. The individual will participate in project meetings, assist in manufacturing process development, support design reviews, and produce hardware for testing, demo, and evaluation. The team works in a fast-paced, R&D environment alongside leading scientists and colleagues from across RTRC and the greater RTX organization (including Collins Aerospace, Pratt and Whitney, and Raytheon) to conceive, develop, and demonstrate next generation technologies for Aerospace and Defense applications.
What You Will Do:
Candidates are expected to have both technical depth and breadth and be highly adaptable with regards to manufacturing practices and techniques. The successful candidate will work with a variety of internal and external customers on unique fabrication assignments relating to test hardware and prototypes. Must demonstrate commitment to safety & continuous improvement, registered standards, company policy, integrity, ethics, and legal compliance. The candidate must have a strong skill base using both CNC and conventional machining methods. The candidate will be required to work with minimum supervision to process plan their own work, devise part fixture schemes, complete set-up operations, perform all necessary machining operations, and inspect final hardware. In addition, the candidate will be required to work with external suppliers and prioritize work to best accomplish all assignments while meeting or exceeding quality, delivery and price metrics. The successful candidate will possess strong written and verbal communication skills and be able to interact with internal technical staff, business unit customers and external suppliers to clarify work details and/or to discuss job progress.
Qualifications You Must Have
A minimum of 4 years of technical high school or 2 years of apprenticeship or other post high school training preferred. Four or more years in a prototype machine shop or similar environment required.
Proficient with set-up and operation of various CNC machines (mill/lathe) and use of conventional machining techniques
Capable of process planning, selection of tools and feeds & speeds for various materials have experience working to tight tolerances and experience using various inspection tools to verify conformance of finished work piece to specifications
Proficient in reading and interpreting 2-D drawings and GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and have knowledge of Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software and/or conversational programming and have a working knowledge of computers and Microsoft applications
U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen or Permanent U.S. Resident/Green Card) required.
Qualifications We Prefer
Experience with SolidWorks and CAMWorks or Siemens NX CAD/CAM software, experience writing programs for Proto-Trak Mills and Lathes
Previous experience in aerospace and defense manufacturing, knowledge of Global Trade Compliance requirements and the ability to accurately estimate fabrication costs and schedule
Experience with CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) arm and/or optical comparator, experience in simultaneous 5-axis programming and machining
Ability to machine intricate and precise parts from a variety of materials including nickel superalloys and titanium alloys, and the ability to hold tolerances as close as +/- .0002 and experience with machining of additively manufactured components
Ability to produce basic to moderate complexity hardware directly from sketches, prints, or CAD models, experience with wire or sinker electrical discharge machining and a thorough understanding of metallic properties

The salary range for this role is 48,000 USD - 116,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
