    Position Description

    Job Summary

    Provide effective supervision in an area of the coated abrasives manufacturing process in order to meet the requirements of other departments as well as customers so that delivery, quality, safety, service and cost objectives of the department are met**.**

    The position is a first line supervisory position requiring practical knowledge of coated abrasives manufacturing developed through accumulated work experience.  The incumbent is expected to possess some basic technical and supervisory skills with minimal exposure to theoretical concepts.  This knowledge and experience is utilized in developing solutions to spontaneous and routine technical/ equipment problems referred to the incumbent by his/her subordinates.  He/she has the responsibility for coordinating the activities and schedules of personnel and equipment within his/her area.

    The incumbent spends a considerable amount of time in direct supervision and is expected to be immediately aware of any conflicts or problems which will affect the productivity of the area.  He/she formulates immediate solutions to routine problems of this nature and seeks out support form technical team to assist in more complex situations. 

    The incumbent usually has daily contact with the Plant Manager.  Review of the incumbent’s progress in attaining specific results would be on an on-going process.  These results would include safety, delivery, quality, and cost containment.

    The incumbent is accountable for maintaining high standards of safety and house-keeping.  He/she may stop the work process at any time safety is a concern. 

    The incumbent will be heavily involved in maintaining a productive workforce through motivation, training, cross-training and general development and general development of skills.  He/she would be the first contact for complaints, questions and requests from the workforce.  The incumbent’s involvement is primarily directed toward meeting the objective of delivering a quality product on time and within budget. 

    The incumbent will act as a change agent, usually their supervisory knowledge to promote and achieve a continuous improvement philosophy with their reports.  Using that strategy, the supervisor will engage reports through communication, motivation, and education to recognize new and more efficient ways to produce a quality product while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality

    Required Qualifications

    • Completion of University or technical degree/certification preferred or Completion of High School with relevant experience;

    • 5-10 years in a manufacturing environment, with at least 3 years of direct supervisory experience in a unionized environment

    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.

    • Strong leadership skills including people development, conflict management and collaborative decision making skills.

    • Sound decision-making skills while managing stress and competing priorities.

    • Ability to set clear expectations, coach, develop, motivate, and hold staff accountable for performance.

    • Ability to effectively delegate tasks and provide appropriate supervision to department staff.

    • Must be flexible to adapt to changing and varying work requirements.

    • Demonstrated ability to manage with a “Safety First” attitude

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

    • Highly motivated and self-directed.
