Job Goals: Saint-Gobain Solar Gard is looking for a Senior Research Engineer I to join our team at our San Diego Campus. Saint-Gobain is a world leader in developing innovative, high-performance solutions through our exceptional experience in materials science and processing. We are searching for a hands-on leader to investigate, research, and develop new technologies that strengthen our offerings in our Composites BU. The incumbent will have the opportunity to leverage their engineering and materials expertise by leading their projects from the initial stages of conceptualization, prototyping, and experimental testing to the implementation in manufacturing. As a Senior Research Engineer I, the incumbent will be expected to lead R&D projects through effective collaboration with R&D colleagues, commercial team members, manufacturing teams, external customers, and external suppliers. R&D projects are typically in materials, process, product, and/or new technology development or a combination of thereof to meet specific customer needs for high-performance composite solutions. The incumbent will create and execute project plans, design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and present findings in written and oral formats. In addition to the candidate's primary projects, the candidate will be expected to support projects led by others. Essential Responsibilities of the Position: • Extensively utilizes research and/or project experiences and broad expertise of materials, processes, techniques, and products to improve on or develop products, increase performance, or reduce costs to maximize production and/or support fundamental research within a major product or technology area. • Stays up to date on new technology applications and competitive uses of same in work with materials, products, and processes, and in development of new knowledge. • Manages multiple projects simultaneously, on time, well documented, and within budget to meet business and customer objectives. • Demonstrates open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility. • Seeks out others to enhance and streamline development and decision-making. • Ability to communicate technically with internal/external collaborators and utilize knowledge to advance projects and identify productive synergies. • Continuously and reliably carries projects through to completion with minimal supervision. • Keeps project teams on track with project timeline and budget. • Utilization of Gate Process and Change/Design Control methodology/ideology in research projects. • Support company goals and objectives, policies and procedures. • Possess fundamental knowledge of adhesives, UV cure coatings, mechanical, thermal and structural characterization of polymers. • Other duties as assigned.
Essential Requirements for the Position: • Bachelor’s Degree in Material Science, Polymer Science, Polymer Chemistry, Chemistry, or other related disciplines. • Minimum seven (7) years’ work experience in an R&D environment. • Demonstrated skills in project management for multi-functional teams. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact with diverse groups. • Confident, independently motivated self-starter. • Demonstrated aptitude to understand new concepts and technology and ability to apply them quickly. • Ability to network/communicate within and outside of the group, as well as across disciplines. • Follow and uphold the Saint-Gobain Principles of Conduct and Action. • Ability to collaborate in a team environment. • Develop an ability to maintain composure and organize teams in high-pressure situations. • Demonstrate adequate knowledge of health, safety and environment protocols. • Possess a body of technical work commensurate with years of experience, including but not limited to: demonstration of familiarity with data analysis, drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation, and technical documents and/or patents. • Demonstrated leadership skills. • Possesses excellent communication and influencing skills. • Possesses excellent problem-solving skills. • Ability to travel as needed.
