What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Advanced Accelerator Physics and Advanced Radiographic Technologies departments are seeking experienced physicists or research engineers to join a dynamic team conducting pulsed power technologies and systems research! Are you passionate about advancing the understanding of the science used in pulsed power and using your skills to improve pulsed power technologies, particularly by upgrading Z and designing and building advanced systems? Do you dream of leading development of the technical foundation for next-generation pulsed power systems that support the U.S. Department of Energy’s national-security mission? If so, you will want to consider applying for this opportunity.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

    • Develop next generation pulsed power drivers as “engines of discovery” for national security and high energy density physics
    • Provide technical leadership to dynamic team of scientists, engineers, and technicians in designing, building, and testing these drivers
    • Lead and collaborate on experiments on Z and other pulsed power machines
    • Develop mathematical models, new components, new technologies, and new systems
    • Perform analytic calculations and numerical simulations
    • Publish results in premier peer-reviewed physics and engineering journals

The experimental component of the work outlined above will be conducted in pulsed-power laboratory environments and will involve a variety of hazards including high voltage, high current, high-energy capacitors, vacuum systems, and large equipment.

The Pulsed Power Accelerator Science and Technology Group (1650) supports a dynamic and flexible work environment. Candidates applying on this requisition may be interviewed and/or hired by one of two organizations within this group.

Join our team and achieve your goals while making a difference!

    Qualifications We Require:

    • PhD in engineering, physics, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Experience in design and fielding of pulsed-power components and systems
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Experience leading teams
    • Experience developing and applying safety principles in laboratory activities
    • Experience in developing the science and technology foundations of pulsed power using experimental, analytical, or computational skills
    • Experience with electrical, mechanical, pressure, vacuum, and diagnostic systems
    • Experience in the construction aspects of pulsed power systems, i.e., technology maturation, design, engineering, costing, or scheduling
    • Publications including first-author peer-reviewed journal articles in engineering, physics, or a related field

    About Our Team:

The Pulsed Power Accelerator Science and Technology Group (1650) invents, develops, builds, tests, and improves pulsed power systems for a wide range of national security missions for the country. We develop innovative pulsed power architectures for multiple missions requiring high voltages and high current accelerators. We are also developing the pulsed power science basis for energy storage, insulation, switching, and vacuum power flow. We will apply these developments to achieve increased performance from Z and to design next-generation drivers such as the next Z, high-voltage electron beam sources, precision dynamic materials drivers, inertial confinement fusion drivers, and high-current warm X-ray sources. We develop and support vacuum power flow modeling and diagnostics. We also manage Sandia's participation in the Advanced Sources and Detectors – Scorpius project, whose goal is deployment of a >20 MeV multi-pulse electron beam accelerator. Our state-of-the-art pulsed power machines include Z, Thor, Mykonos, Vulcan, and many small-scale devices. This team is part of the Radiation, Electrical and High Energy Density (REHEDS) Research Foundation at Sandia.
