    Position summary

    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    We are seeking a graduate student in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or closely related engineering field with a background in electric power systems.

    Graduate summer interns can expect to work in the area of electric power systems focused on excited research problems in these areas:

    • Power system optimization
    • Grid resilience
    • Protection
    • Machine learning
    • Data analytics
    • Power system dynamics
    • Power system stability
    • Electricity markets
    • Controls
    • Inverter-based resources
    • Renewable energy integration
    • Power system simulation and modeling
    • Power distribution and transmission systems
    • Energy storage systems
    • Power system planning
    • Black-start restoration
    • Smart grid operations

    On any given day, you may be called on to:

    • Work with a mentor and a team of researchers for a specific project and task
    • Perform valuable research and development to solve complex problems
    • Gather and analyze data for electric power systems to help answer complex research questions

    Posting Duration:

    NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

    Qualifications We Require:

    You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

    • Earned bachelor's degree
    • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
    • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
    • U.S. citizenship

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Be a student in an engineering or related scientific field
    • Interest in Electrical Power Systems Research
    • Experience coding or in software development
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision and ability to work in a team environment
    • Willing to work in Albuquerque, NM.
    • Have a means of transportation to and from work

    Sandia National Laboratories is a U.S. research laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and supports numerous federal, state, and local government agencies, companies, and organizations. Interns specific to this Electric Power Systems Research Department will work in one of many departments at Sandia focused on Power and Energy Systems.     Interns will have opportunities to be a part of intern focused activities including tours of many labs at Sandia and workshops to better understand the wide-range of research at Sandia.

    Security Clearance:
