    Position summary

    Posting Duration:

    NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

    Salary Range:

    $158,000 - $268,600

    *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    We are seeking a Manager, R&D Science and Engineering to lead the Weapon Subsystems 6 Department, working in collaboration with the two other 8420 Organizations to develop and realize critical components for U.S. nuclear weapons modernization programs. As the manager of 8422, you will be responsible for leading a team in the execution of critical R&D of advanced concepts, product realization development testing and design qualification of advanced electronic subsystems, and production support for existing systems. Our products are high consequence applications supporting the B61-12, W80-4, W87-1, and future modernization programs each requiring exceptionally high confidence, quality and reliability to support the safety and security of our U.S. nuclear weapons. This department works closely with other partners across the Laboratories and the U.S. nuclear weapons enterprise to execute our scope of work while managing cost, risk, manufacturability, complexity, and logistical burden.

    The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for providing professional leadership and guidance to the department’s staff as well as programmatic and technical leadership for the department’s mission scope.

    On any given day, you may be called on to:

    • Provide leadership, guidance and communication to motivate the team and direct the organization
    • Provide coaching and direction to staff including developing career goals and working to align assignments with those goals.
    • Manage the day-to-day operational, technical, and administrative responsibilities of the department.
    • Work with 8420 management and project teams to identify and secure needed resources which may include additional staff, infrastructure, space, and/or, funding.
    • Partner with internal organizations (systems groups, component organizations, other security organizations) and external organizations (NNSA, LLNL, LANL, KCNSC, and PX) to develop requirements, plan projects, and execute work.
    • Represent interests in Laboratory strategic planning and workforce development activities.
    • Participate in efforts to recruit, train, and mentor new engineers to steward surety capabilities and contribute effectively to broader Sandia missions.
    • Oversee laboratory operations to ensure that high-value and hazardous test activities are performed safely.
    • Provide oversight of, and guidance about, security and classification procedures.
    • Foster a culture of inclusion, safety, and security.

    The successful candidate is not necessarily expected to possess immediate knowledge of all surety systems and nuclear weapons, but must have the willingness and aptitude to develop that knowledge in a timely manner.

    Qualifications We Require:

    • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or science discipline, plus 8 years relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Experience and knowledge of Sandia's nuclear weapons program and the nuclear weapons enterprise.
    • Ability to travel up to 25% of your time, usually to Albuquerque, NM, Los Alamos, NM, Kansas City, KS, Amarillo, TX, or Washington DC.
    • U.S. DOE Q security clearance.
    • Ability to obtain special program and SCI access.

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Master’s degree, or higher, in an engineering or science discipline with at least eight years’ relevant experience or equivalent relevant experience.
    • A minimum of two years of demonstrated leadership experience
    • Experience with weapon surety systems.
    • Experience working with production partners (KCNSC, Pantex).
    • Line management experience.
    • Ability to create a positive atmosphere in a very dynamic environment.
    • Experience in project development and customer interactions.
    • Experience in project management and execution.
    • Experience in leading and contributing to teams.
    • Experience in supporting and developing staff.
    • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written.

    Organization 8420 (8427, 8429, and 8422) supports the weapon stockpile and modernization programs by developing advanced electronic subsystems for high consequence applications requiring exceptionally high confidence, quality and reliability.     Security Clearance:

    Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
