NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Salary Range:

$158,000 - $268,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Level 1 Manager to join the 08430 team and lead the Telemetry Engineer 2 (8434) organization. The 8434 department currently has responsibility for our W80-4 telemetry development projects (JTA TM, CTU Data Recorder) and a couple of our other Data Recorder projects including the B61-12 FASTER system. The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for providing professional leadership and guidance to the department’s staff as well as programmatic and technical leadership for the department’s projects. This includes meeting all currently agreed upon milestones and deliverables, maturing and deploying new technologies, and working with the 08430 management team to define the future of the business. 08430 is a highly matrixed group internally and the successful candidates will be expected to work closely with the 08430 management team to develop consistent and equitable processes and staffing decisions across the group.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

• Provide coaching and direction to staff including developing career goals and working to align assignments with those goals
• Manage the day-to-day operational, technical, and administrative responsibilities of the department.
• Work with the 08430 management team and department project teams to identify and secure needed resources which may include additional staff, infrastructure, and/or, funding.
• Partner with internal organizations (Systems groups, Surveillance, Component Organizations) and external organizations (AF, LLNL, LANL, KCNSC, and PX) to develop requirements, plan projects, and execute work.
• Represent current and future JTA needs in strategic planning and workforce development.
• Participate in efforts to recruit, train, and mentor new engineers to steward the Joint Test Assembly (JTA) capability and contribute effectively to broader Sandia missions.
• Oversee laboratory operations to ensure that high-value and hazardous test activities are performed safely.
• Provide oversight of, and guidance about, security and classification procedures.
• Foster a culture of inclusion, safety, and security.

The successful candidate is not necessarily expected to possess immediate knowledge of telemetry instrumentation systems and nuclear weapons but must have the willingness and aptitude to develop that knowledge in a timely manner.

Qualifications We Require:

• Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in an engineering or science discipline, with at least eight years’ relevant experience or equivalent engineering or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the job.
• Experience in project development and customer interactions.
• Experience in project management and execution.
• Experience in leading and contributing to teams.
• Demonstrated experience in coaching and/or mentorship.
• Ability to travel up to 33% of your time, usually to Albuquerque, NM, Los Alamos, NM, Kansas City, MO, Amarillo, TX.
• U.S. DOE Q security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

• Master’s degree, or higher, in an engineering or science discipline with at least eight years’ relevant experience or equivalent relevant experience or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the job.
• A minimum of two years of demonstrated leadership experience.
• Experience in supporting and developing staff including hiring new staff.
• Experience and knowledge of Sandia's nuclear weapons program and the nuclear weapons enterprise.
• Experience in JTA/TM.
• Experience working with external production partners and stakeholders (KCNSC, Pantex, USAF).
• Line management experience.
• Ability to create a positive atmosphere in a very dynamic environment.
• Familiarity or experience with Earned Value Management (EVM).
• Ability to obtain an SCI clearance.

About Our Team:

Organization 08434, Telemetry Engineering 2 - along with sister departments 08432, 08435, 08436, 08437, and 08438 - has responsibility for the design, development, and qualification of weapon system instrumentation (or telemetry systems) for use in Joint Test Assemblies (JTAs) for the entire US nuclear arsenal. The JTA program is a cornerstone of the Stockpile Evaluation Program and allows critical assessment of the weapon system, DoD platform, and support personnel performance. To fulfill its mission responsibilities, Organization 08434 employs a diverse and talented group of electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and technologists. The Organization collaborates with other NW groups within Sandia and across the Nuclear Weapons Complex, including NNSA, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the production agencies (National Security Center and Pantex), and the DoD. Organization 08434 is also expected to have significant interactions with other DOE Laboratories and other NNSA entities (beyond the NW Complex), the DoD, and other government agencies.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
