    NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    We are seeking a Microelectronic/Semiconductor Technologist to perform a wide variety of microfabrication processes for our compound semiconductor optoelectronics programs. The work will include microfabrication activities using Lithography, Deposition (CVD and metals), Wet and Dry etch, Defect inspection and additional metrology in Class 10 compound semiconductor facility. It is expected that a successful candidate will become qualified to proficiently perform all wafer fabrication process steps required on the assigned projects within 6-12 months of training.

    On any given day, you may be called to:

    • Complete hands-on performance of the full suite of microelectronic fabrication processes including: metrology, photolithography, wet and dry etch, metal evaporation and electroplating, thin film deposition, wafer thinning, and dicing in a clean room environment.
    • Perform Metrology support measurements and visual inspections typically encountered in device and circuit microfabrication, including use of manual electrical probe stations for bench testing.
    • Work alongside engineers to implement projects and to support R&D and fabrication activities.
    • Reliably manipulate and handle fragile semiconductor wafers with tweezers

    Ability to wear a clean-room attire for up to 4 consecutive hours including hood, gown, and gloves.

    Qualifications We Require:

    • Associate’s degree in a Science or Engineering field or;
    • Four (4) or more years of relevant experience
    • Experience relevant to semiconductor microfabrication such as:
    • wet chemical processing
    • microfabrication equipment
    • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE L clearance

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Two (2) or more years of experience with direct hands-on semiconductor microfabrication processing, especially with III-V materials and devices
    • Bachelor's degree in STEM
    • Experience working in a clean room environment
    • Experience in a laboratory environment operating semiconductor fabrication equipment
    • Ability to prioritize work across multiple competing tasks
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication and time management skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment
    • Familiar with applicable safety requirements relevant to semiconductor processing work (chemical safety, personal protective equipment)
    • Previous experience in a low-volume production, wide product mix R&D micro fabrication environment

    About Our Team:

    The III-V Optoelectronics Department develops compound semiconductor and RF devices, photonics, and microsystems for national security applications including high-performance computing, communications, renewable energy, sensing and imaging. As part of Sandia's Microsystems Science, Technology and Components Center, we research, design, fabricate, prototype, test and deliver novel RF and photonics devices, including lasers, photonic integrated circuits, and sensors. We focus on R&D of high-performance technology platforms and customized microsystems. We leverage state-of-the-art materials and fabrication capabilities within the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications (MESA) cleanroom complex to serve a broad mix of internal and external customers. Core capabilities include: Optical, optoelectronic and electronic modeling and simulation Epitaxial design, materials growth (MOCVD/MBE) and materials characterization Design, microfabrication and testing of III-V photonic devices, RF devices and photonic integrated circuits Heterogeneous microsystem integration and prototyping High-speed and harsh-environment optoelectronics, and device reliability.
