    Position summary

    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    We are seeking a Neutron Generator Electromechanical Trades Apprentice. On any given day, you may be called on to:

    • Manufacturing of high consequence and high rigor products. Perform all functions required to produce neutron tubes and generators. Ensure that production processes and related equipment and materials are functioning and ready for use in fabricating qualified and development hardware.
    • Work involves following detailed written operating instructions, procedures, and specifications in the manufacture of high consequence products using manually-operated and computer- controlled equipment such as vacuum systems, H-furnaces, evaporators, and final bake out stations in a contamination-controlled (e.g., clean room ) limited access facility.
    • Using documented processes, perform experiments to characterize new or improved processes, fixtures, and equipment; fabricate development products.
    • Participate on, or lead, Continuous Process Improvement Teams.
    • Verify the readiness of operators, work instructions, equipment, tooling, fixtures, and gages to perform work.
    • Perform chemical cleaning, etching, electroplating, thin film evaporation and thick film metallization, laser, resistance, and electron beam welding, machining, OGP operation, brazing, epoxy joining, and encapsulation, subassembly, final assembly, flame spraying, neutron tube exhaust processing, high voltage product testing and other fabrication processes.
    • Identify deficiencies in production line, coordinate the work of others to ensure the attainment of development and production schedules, utilize a computerized database to maintain required records and perform in-process inspection operations to ensure product meets customer design, development and manufacturing.
    • Some work assignments will require RAD-worker or explosives training and certification.
    • As assigned, act as lead person which includes, but is not limited to, responsibilities for making schedule commitments, assignment of work to coworkers and instructing and training others.
    • Plan and perform work using industry-standard safety practices. Requirements include completion of the Sandia Production Trades Training Program or successful completion of Sandia National Laboratories Neutron Generator Apprentice Training Program certified by the NM State Apprenticeship Council.
    • Sandia has an Agency Shop Agreement with the Metal Trades Council (MTC). The position being offered to you is a represented position. Therefore, as an employee represented by the MTC, you must either become a union member or pay a monthly agency fee equal to the union dues. You will be contacted by a union steward concerning membership during the first week of your employment.

    NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

    Qualifications We Require:

    Prerequisites for Entry into an Apprenticeship Program

    Associates of Applied Science (AAS) Degree Program as provided by Central New Mexico community College or Equivalent with an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater. Degrees could be in the following degree concentration: Metals Technology with a concentration in Machine Tool Technology, Electronics Technology or Electronic Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Technology with any concentration or equivalent work experience (minimum 4 years).

    Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Minimum of 5-8 years as a fully qualified Materials Processing Specialty Tradesperson

    OR

    • Completion of a State approved Materials Specialty apprenticeship program
    • Completion of the post-secondary classes listed above
    • Attainment of an Associate's degree with an emphasis in a relevant area
    • Possess the equivalent on-the-job work experience
    • Ability to follow written work instructions
    • Demonstrated ability to conduct work in a safe manner
    • Work successfully in a team environment
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly integrated and small team
    • Experience with high consequence component production
    • Experience handling explosive devices
    • Process improvement experience
    • Use of computers to accomplish work tasks
    • Experience with Oracle
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of personnel
    • Active Department of Energy "L" or "Q" clearance
