    Position summary

    Bidder Eligibility:

    Level promotions (Member to Distinguished, Senior to Distinguished, Principal to Distinguished) may be permitted, but are not guaranteed, on this requisition.

    Employees must remain in their current position for one year before applying for a new position, with the exception of student interns.     NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

    Salary Range:

    $138,600 - $235,500

    *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    Sandia’s Atmospheric Sciences Department is currently seeking an experienced R&D atmospheric or environmental scientist at the Distinguished Member of Technical Staff level. Are you an experienced atmospheric or earth system scientist interested in leading research development efforts in atmospheric and climate sciences within Sandia's Climate Security Center? Do you have an established career in research and development relating to atmospheric or environmental processes, field or laboratory measurements of atmospheric parameters, Arctic systems and impacts, ecosystem feedbacks, or climate security? Are you interested in solving challenges related to atmospheric and climate science through Modeling Experimental (ModEx) approaches, instrument development, measurements, and many related fields at the DOE's leading engineering R&D laboratory? Join Sandia to work on cross-disciplinary teams in support of Sandia's overarching mission of delivering "Exceptional Service in the National Interest" and the Climate Security Center’s mission of “Accelerating Innovation to Save the Planet”.

    The selected candidate will provide technical research, program management, and strategic initiative support for programs related to atmospheric and climate sciences including the Arctic, climate intervention and Greenhouse Gases (GHGs).

    On any given day, you may be called on to:

    • Provide programmatic/technical leadership and support for one or more department efforts in the following technical areas: Atmospheric sciences, climate sciences, climate intervention, measurements and modeling, Arctic, atmospheric processes and impacts, field and laboratory observations
    • Support Sandia’s role in the management of DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facilities for the North Slope of Alaska (NSA) and Tethered Balloon System (TBS)
    • Engage with established partners across the laboratory, current sponsors and develop new sponsors and opportunities
    • Plan and execute field deployments or measurement campaigns for scientific or applied research, including proposals, planning, safety, execution, analysis, and reporting/publications.
    • Write and lead proposal efforts to various agencies
    • Mentor and develop early-career staff and teams
    • Assist in the development of near-and long-term strategies and goals for the center and the Lab climate initiative

    Qualifications We Require:

    You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

    • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a relevant STEM field, plus 12 years related experience; or a Master's in above, plus 8 years related experience; or a PhD in above, plus 4 years related
    • 10 years’ experience in one of the following technical areas: atmospheric science, climate sciences, hydrology, environmental sciences, or a related sub-discipline
    • Strong demonstration of relevant publications and impact
    • An active DOE Q-level security clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain one
    • U.S. citizenship

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Project leadership and management including task and milestone development, coordination with customers to plan and execute projects, and tracking of project metrics, including schedule, cost, and deliverables
    • Experience working directly with federal sponsors, including the DOE Office of Science
    • Demonstrated experience in ModEx
    • Demonstrated experience in program development and successful proposal to project conversion
    • Experience in leading field campaigns and teams
    • Experience operating in the Arctic and remote field sites
    • Experience with instrument development, measurements, and data reduction/analysis
    • MATLAB, Fortran, Python, or other programming language to develop advanced analysis tools for large datasets
    • Experience operating Climate or Earth System Models on High Performance Computing Platforms and interpreting results for a variety of applications and customers
    • An active SCI security clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain one

    About Our Team:

    The Atmospheric Sciences Department at Sandia National Labs have expertise in atmospheric measurements and modeling. Technical activities cover the spectrum from theory to application, including algorithm development, computer modeling, data inversion, instrumentation and measurement systems development, field deployments, field campaign execution, and field site management. Particular expertise exists in the measurement and modeling of atmospheric processes in the Arctic including the use of unmanned aerial vehicles such as high-altitude balloons, small fixed wing and rotary aircraft and tethered balloons, as well as the use and cold hardening of measurement systems such as radar and lidar. The department serves as a Laboratories resource for atmospheric sensing expertise.

    Security Clearance:
