What Your Job Will Be Like:

The W87-1 System team is at the forefront of a program to modernize the W87-1, a replacement for the W78 warhead. Plans call for fielding the W87-1 on the Department of Defense's (DoDs) new United States Air Force (USAF) Sentinel missile within the Mk21A Reentry Vehicle (RV), two major USAF acquisition programs in concurrent development with the W87-1.

We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated W87-1 Requirements team member (Job Title R&D Electrical Engineer). In this role, you may be responsible for generating and maintaining the non-nuclear derived system compatibility definition (CD), which is intended to be the main document that derives requirements from the Interface Control Documents and System CD and work in conjunction with design teams and surety teams to derive requirements to component product realization teams. This role requires expert knowledge requirements and the system design in order to provide a complete set of system requirements to all parties associated with the functionality of the W87-1. This team member will be directly involved in all aspects of requirements management including testing, qualification and verification. This role also requires upward reporting to program leadership and Sandia’s executive management on metrics associated with requirements performance and/or exceptions.

On any given day, you may be expected to:

    • Derive system requirements for components compatibility documents
    • Derive and interpret shared requirements with LLNL
    • Collaborate regularly with the program’s leadership and Sandia’s executive management on metrics and burn down plans
    • Prepare for and present to diverse audiences at technical design reviews and programmatic meetings
    • Coordinate with teams to develop a detailed understanding of customer requirements and ensure maturation of requirements for specific system aspects or components
    • Attend technical meetings with the mechanical, electrical and qualification teams
    • Work together with other system requirement engineers and/or component engineers, and provide technical mentorship on how to write appropriate requirements for verification
    • Manage the requirements database objects for requirements traceability, orphan requirements and inconsistencies within requirements language
    • Assist in integration activities with various teams and PRTs
    • Represent Sandia on multi-organizational project teams (i.e. NNSA, DoD, LLNL, SNL)

    Qualifications We Require:

    • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field plus (7) or more years of related experience; or Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering plus (5) or more years of related experience; or equivalent related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development
    • Experience working on nuclear weapons design, qualification, production, or related projects
    • Proven ability to develop and lead large, cross-organization, multidisciplinary teams
    • Active DoE Q-level security clearance

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Experience developing, negotiating, and communicating requirements for either Joint Test Assemblies or other nuclear weapon system-level designs
    • 5 or more years of experience working on a PRT or within NW product realization framework
    • Project management skills
    • Experience with MBSE principles and implementation
    • Ability to function in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment, and to work effectively with different levels of management, DoE/DoD partners, and Systems Leads
    • Demonstrated commitment to value diversity and inclusion among the workforce
    • Ability to develop trusting partnerships
    • Ability to maintain a constructive approach in a dynamic environment
    • Experience with Phase 6.X NSE program execution
    • Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to build and present briefings that are clear and compelling to large and diverse audiences
