    Position summary

    Posting Duration:

    NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

    Salary Range:

    $138,600 - $235,500

    *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    We seek an R&D cybersecurity professional with a demonstrated track record of leadership, innovation, and technical expertise in areas relevant to mobile systems, such as mobile/cellular infrastructure, real-time operating systems (RTOS)/embedded systems, wireless communications, complex networked systems, cloud technologies, Android/IOS application and operating system security analysis, or radiofrequency signal analysis.

    Primary job responsibilities will focus on conducting or leading mobile research and the successful candidate will lead a team of researchers responsible for identifying novel research directions executing a mission-focused, externally sponsored research portfolio focused on next generation mobile cybersecurity. Specifically, we seek a candidate capable of identifying current and future research needs based on sponsor missions and priorities, authoring effective research proposals to address those needs, and leading cutting edge research projects in collaboration with staff, management, and the business team. The candidate will mentor staff and other project leads, helping to craft technical vision and strategic plans for growing the area of sponsor-facing mobile systems research at Sandia. The desired candidate will have significant research and leadership experience, having served in a project leadership role for more than a year on a sponsored research activity. This position offers the opportunity to engage in a leadership role in an exciting area of mobile cybersecurity research in support of national security, and to have an impact on the mission of our sponsors.

    On any given day, one may be called upon to

    • Develop innovative mobile research strategies in alignment with sponsor and mission needs
    • Engage with project leads to plan research vision and directions
    • Lead a team of developers, engineers, and researchers to address sponsor-provided mission challenges and develop and write proposals to sponsor proposal calls
    • Collaborate with team members to develop tools, conduct analyses, and brainstorm solution approaches to complex mobile security research challenges
    • Conceptualize and propose potential research approaches to bring together the fields of mobile systems and security analysis
    • Be a resource for collaboration across the center and the Labs
    • Support project leads in crafting written and visual reports characterizing research findings
    • Research and identify strategic directions and technology roadmaps for future project work in support of sponsor missions and goals
    • Coordinate with project and program leadership to identify and meet sponsor requirements and mission needs
    • Provide technical expertise in support of portfolio research.

    Qualifications We Require:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields: Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Computer Forensics, Mathematics, Physics or a relevant STEM discipline; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
    • Plus Twelve years’ engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
    • Ability to perform mobile research and projects as primary job function
    • A background in mobile, IoT, and/or wireless research
    • You must have an active US DOE Q or DoD TS security clearance.
    • The ability to obtain and maintain a SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.

    Qualifications We Desire:

    Ideally, we would like to see your background include some of the following:

    • MS or PhD Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Computer Forensics, Mathematics, Physics or a relevant STEM discipline;
    • Familiar with cellular/IoT/handset hardware, mobile software/operating systems, vulnerability research and 5G+ standards
    • Strong oral and written communication skills and an ability to explain complex ideas clearly and concisely
    • Creativity to provide innovative and novel solutions to mission problems
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication and time management skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage R&D projects.
    • Demonstrated ability in program development (internal and external)
    • Demonstrated ability to develop proposals/ideas (LDRD,RFP’s, etc.)
    • Expected to serve on committees of technical societies, LDRD committees, as well internal and external working groups.
    • Ability to represent the mobile team to brief sponsors and stakeholders on relevant research findings, and approaches, and anticipate current and future mission needs
    • Ability to travel and interact positively with a diverse set of SPP/SIPP sponsors.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage diverse security requirements in a classified environment.
    • Active and ability to maintain a required US DOE Q security clearance.
    • Active SCI Clearance, which may require a polygraph test.

    Security Clearance:

    Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
