    Position summary

    Posting Duration:

    NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

    Salary Range:

    $88,600 - $172,300

    *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    We are seeking a R&D S&E, Nuclear Engineer with safeguards and/or nuclear fuel cycle experience to join Sandia's Storage & Transportation Tech Organization. This role will support safeguards modeling and simulation for various types of nuclear facilities in the nuclear fuel cycle. Work will focus on programming plant models for safeguards analysis and evaluating new concepts to augment materials control and accountability. We are looking for an engineer to think at a systems level and propose and evaluate new approaches and ideas for advanced safeguards systems. Familiarity with chemical processing or nuclear material safeguards is desired, along with experience in modeling and simulation. This position will require the ability to clearly communicate results for program managers with the potential to develop new proposals. A limited amount of travel may be required.

    On any given day, you may be called on to:

    • Develop and program safeguards models and perform analysis of safeguards systems
    • Develop new ideas in areas related to nuclear fuel cycle safeguards and security
    • Highlight scientific work through technical presentations and conference attendance
    • Compile and interpret data, contributing to technical reports, journal articles, and oral presentation focused on disseminating and documenting the performed experimental work

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 50% of the time.

    Qualifications We Require:

    • Master's in Nuclear, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or other closely related STEM field
    • Experience with Matlab, Python or similar programming experience
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Phd in Nuclear, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or other closely related STEM field
    • Advanced computer programming abilities, which may include advanced Matlab and Simulink experience, or Python experience
    • Familiarity with domestic and international safeguards or security
    • Record or publications in peer-reviewed journals
    • Strong written and spoken communication skills

    About Our Team:

    The Storage and Transportation Technologies Department conducts the R&D to support the development of the technical basis for the extended storage and transportation of commercial used nuclear fuel, and safeguards and security modeling and analysis of nuclear fuel cycle facilities. The department produces peer-reviewed research reports pertaining to many areas of used nuclear fuel storage, transportation, and security including: chemical instigators and mitigate of stress corrosion cracking of stainless steel; analysis of stress and strain on used nuclear fuel rods, cladding, and assemblies; modeling & simulation for analysis of safeguards and security systems.

    Security Clearance:
