    Position summary

    Posting Duration:

    NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

    Salary Range:

    $113,500 - $223,500

    *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    We are seeking a motivated scientist who will use radiography capabilities (i.e., digital radiography, computed tomography) to evaluate the internal structure and integrity of manufactured components. As part of the Sandia/California Radiography team, the selected candidate will support component design and process development, materials evaluation, failure analysis, product and process qualification, and other activities where radiography and other non-destructive analysis techniques are required.

    On any given day, you may be called on to:

    • Devise and perform materials characterization to answer critical questions about the engineered components important to our scientific and national defense missions
    • Conduct innovative experiments using various techniques including digital radiography, computed tomography, x-ray fluorescence, and auger spectroscopy
    • Develop fixtures for effective two- and three-dimensional radiography imaging using conventional and advanced manufacturing methods
    • Process imaging data using various software including Volume Graphics
    • Identify new research ideas and directions, collaborating with colleagues to write research proposals.
    • Promote a safe working environment through analysis of hazards, development of controls & mitigations, and documentation of safety-focused operating procedures and best practices
    • Present results at workshops, conferences, and meetings with sponsors

    Qualifications We Require:

    • Master’s degree in Materials Science, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field plus (1) year of directly related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job
    • Experience with x-ray imaging technologies (e.g., digital radiography, CT) and analysis
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field
    • Familiarity with image analysis software and processing digital imaging data
    • Publication of research results in peer reviewed journals
    • Ability to work autonomously, while integrating effectively into a multidisciplinary team environment
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to team with others of diverse backgrounds

    The ND Materials and Radiation Effects department (8645) provides expertise in materials and radiation sciences to support Sandia’s missions in nuclear deterrence, proliferation detection and energy. We steward radiography capabilities and exercise them to image and analyze the structure of materials and components. We develop and characterize organic and inorganic materials used as scintillators in radiation detection technologies. We perform detailed modeling, simulation, and experiments to characterize and analyze the effects of ionizing radiation on materials and components used in our engineered systems. All of this is accomplished by bringing to bear our advanced capabilities and the team’s expertise in materials science, chemistry, physics, computation, and engineering.

    Security Clearance:
