    NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    The B61-12/W80-4 JTA Systems Engineering Department has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Engineer, or Systems Engineer with a mechanical engineering background. The two Nuclear Deterrent modernization programs supported by the Department will provide the successful candidate significant career growth opportunities.

    Mechanical engineers within the Department play a critical role in specifying and reviewing activities involving mechanical aspects of the B61-12 and W80-4 JTA system, including design, development, and qualification of the JTA system to closely simulate weapon performance in a surveillance program, development of JTA system and component requirements, design and assembly of several different test units during development stages of the program, production support activities for mechanical components, and testing of development ground and flight test units leading up to final JTA qualification.

    On any given day you may be called on to:

    • Assist with mechanical engineering related day-to-day operations
    • Assist with programmatic and technical planning for the B61-12 and W80-4 JTAs
    • Problem-solve with multidisciplinary teams across the Nuclear Security Enterprise
    • Apply critical thinking skills to design JTA systems and integrate components developed in other departments into the JTA system design
    • Interact closely with the National Nuclear Security Administration, partner Design Agency Labs, and DOE Production Agencies to ensure that technical and programmatic requirements are met

    Qualifications We Require:

    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering or related field plus (2) years of relevant experience; or Master's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering or related field; or equivalent combination of relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
    • Ability to communicate technical and programmatic information effectively in oral and written forms
    • Ability to coordinate technical work performed in other internal or external organizations
    • Ability and willingness to travel
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Ability and desire to work in a collaborative team environment
    • Experience as a Mechanical or Systems Engineer in a weapons systems or related department
    • Background and understanding of nuclear weapons across the lifecycle, familiarity with processes within the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE), and experience in working with the NNSA production agencies
    • Experience as an engineer working on engineering design, development, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects
    • Demonstrated effective leadership, delegation, teamwork, negotiation, conflict resolution and coaching/mentoring skills
    • Proven project management skills

    About Our Team:

    The B61-12/W80-4 JTA Systems Engineering Team (Dept 8248) partners with Groups 2320 and 2350 on B61-12 program scope, and partners with 8240 and 8260 on W80-4 program scope. The scope of the Dept is focused on design and development of JTA systems to closely simulate weapon performance in future surveillance programs, which in turn forms the basis for annual assessment of the nuclear weapon systems. This organization supports the Weapon Systems Engineering Centers, which are responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of US Nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. The organization is comprised of a group of dedicated and motivated engineers and technologists, primarily in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Systems Engineering. The B61-12 program is in Phase 6.6, Full-Scale Production.

    Security Clearance:
