    Position summary

    Posting Duration:

    NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

    Salary Range:

    $116,600 - $229,500

    *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    We are seeking an experienced R&D Mechanical Engineer to be part of a team responsible for the design, test, and verification of the mechanical aspects of a Compatibility Test Unit (CTU) Data Recorder for the W80-4 program. The candidate will be responsible for leading the mechanical design of a Tester to test and calibrate a Data Recorder out in the field. The ability to work with a cross-functional engineering team is critical to deliver the Data Recorder as well as the Tester on time and meeting requirements.

    On any given day, the Mechanical Engineer may be called to:

    • Team with stakeholders, CTU and/or Aircraft Compatibility, to understand and document the Data Recorder Tester needs and requirements
    • Work with the Data Recorder product team as well as the Tester team, which comprises of Mechanical, Electrical, and Firmware engineers, to realize a Tester that can be used in a system configuration out in the field.
    • Use critical thinking to troubleshoot both mechanical and electromechanical issues with the product/Tester and help provide solutions within programmatic constraints
    • Use CREO and PDMlink to design, model, and lead the Tester development
    • Perform and analyze FEA simulations for stress, strain, modal and thermal environments
    • Create test plans, test, and document to characterize mechanical performance of the Tester and/or Data Recorder
    • Work with vendors and Sandia buyers to procure development parts
    • Work with MCAD and the product definition team to create and authorize drawings

    Qualifications We Require:

    • Bachelor's degree in relevant engineering field plus 5 years of related experience; OR Master's degree in relevant engineering field plus 1-year related experience or equivalent
    • Demonstrated experience with CAD design tool(s)
    • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment and collaborate with internal organizations and external production facilities and suppliers
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance
    • Ability to travel up to 25%
    • Ability to work on-site at the Livermore, CA facility

    Qualifications We Desire:

    • Demonstrated breadth of knowledge in Mechanical Engineering and other engineering fields through school projects or work experience
    • Familiarity with Nuclear Weapons Product Realization Lifecycle, 6.X process
    • Top-notch verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling
    • Demonstrated experience working with and across a broad range of stakeholders
    • Currently holding an active security clearance; DOE Q or DOD TS
    • Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment

    About Our Team:

    Organization 8434, Telemetry Engineering II - along with sister departments 08432, 08433, 08435 and 08436- has responsibility for the design, development, and qualification of weapon system instrumentation (or telemetry systems) for use in Joint Test Assemblies (JTAs) for the entire US nuclear arsenal. The JTA program is a cornerstone of the Stockpile Evaluation Program and allows critical assessment of the weapon system, DoD platform, and support personnel performance. To fulfill its mission responsibilities, Organization 8434 employs a diverse and talented group of electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and technologists. The Organization collaborates with other NW groups within Sandia and across the Nuclear Weapons Complex, including NNSA, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the production agencies (National Security Center and Pantex), and the DoD. Organization 08434 is also expected to have significant interactions with other DOE Laboratories and other NNSA entities (beyond the NW Complex), the DoD, and other government agencies.

    Security Clearance:
