    Position summary

    Join the Clean Energy Revolution

    Become a CEQA Sr Attorney at Southern California Edison (SCE) in the Licensing & Land Use section of the Law Department and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you’ll play a key role in obtaining necessary regulatory approvals to construct electric infrastructure by leading complex regulatory proceedings, drafting and reviewing environmental documents, and providing general advice and counsel to SCE’s Transmission and Distribution organization, Regulatory Affairs, as well as other organizational units at SCE. The successful candidate will handle or assist in a wide range of regulatory, land use and environmental issues for the company and will report to a Director/Managing Attorney.

    You must be able to work independently, be attentive to detail, identify legal and business risks, speak on behalf of SCE on complex regulatory, environmental, compliance and enforcement matters, including those arising under federal, California and/or other state laws and regulations. We also are seeking a candidate who has the ability to simultaneously manage a large variety of assignments, work quickly and effectively under pressure, and prioritize activities.

    • Providing legal support to various teams and leaders within SCE, while collaborating with company representatives on decisions that impact utility operations.
    • Advising internal client organizations regarding compliance with applicable regulations, laws and policies and identifying legal and business risks.
    • Representing SCE before the California Public Utilities Commission in proceedings seeking approval to construct major electric infrastructure.
    • Communicating with city, county, state and federal governments on various land use issues including permitting for utility infrastructure construction and maintenance.
    • Drafting environmental documents, regulatory filings, briefs and testimonies. 
    • Interacting with SCE personnel in other departments and external third parties to be able to understand and advise on complex legal, technical, and sensitive issues.
    • Contributing to cross-functional or departmental projects and teams.

    Qualifications

    The essentials

    • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
    • Current member in good standing of the State Bar of California.
    • Experience practicing regulatory or land use law including California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and/or National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) experience.
    • 8+ years of experience practicing law. Your combined experience can be at a law firm, corporate in-house setting, or government authority.

    The preferred

    • Strong academic credentials.
    • Experience in the utility or energy industry or administrative agency practice.
    • Experience working with client organizations to develop and carry-out strategic initiatives, e.g., identification of factual and legal issues, development of prepared testimony, legal pleadings, discovery, witness preparation, cross-examination, oral argument, and legal briefs.
    • Ability to independently handle proceedings as lead attorney in matters before regulatory agencies or first chair-level court experience.
    • Experience interacting with non-lawyer, business and technical clients.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team including the ability to promote positive cooperation within the legal team, with other company personnel, and with outside counsel.

    You should know

    • This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California.  Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.
