    Position summary

    Join the Clean Energy Revolution

    Become a Protection Engineer 2 at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. Protection Engineering is one of the most critical organizations in the company due to its technical significant role.  We provide support to the Grid Control Center (GCC) on daily system operations, including post-fault event analysis, switching sequences/procedures for in-serving testing, etc.  We support field Test technicians on commissioning relays for new and revised relay settings. 

    Protection Engineering provides technical requirements for design of new capital, infrastructure replacement, substation automation projects for transmission and distribution systems.  We are responsible for implementing NERC/WECC compliance programs and other programs such as Special Protection Systems (SPS), Under Frequency Load Shedding (UFLS). 

    A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

    • Review and analyze daily relay operations for determining correct operation or mis-operation in responding to an electrical system disturbance or anomalies. Make appropriate recommendation/resolution for mitigation to Operations, and report to internal Edison external organizations.

    • Perform system studies, provide protection requirements for design, review and sign off one-line, elementary, logic diagrams and work with other discipline engineers - substation engineers, Distribution Field engineers, project engineers, apparatus engineers - to support sub transmission and distribution substation expansion, substation automation and infrastructure replacement projects.

    • Gather and evaluate line data of transmission, sub-transmission, distribution systems, transformer test data, generator data, etc.  Model systems on appropriate software tool, such as CAPE, perform short circuit studies, and protection coordination studies necessary for completing relay settings, perform relay settings, prepare protection summary, coordinate relay settings with neighboring utilities, balancing authorities and perform other required assignments meeting WECC and NERC PRC compliance.

    • Issue Substation Relays and field Auto recloser settings (GE, SEL and Electromagnetic) via ASPEN relay database to the field, support Test technicians in-servicing or commissioning relay settings, review/approve returned as-left relay setting files and communicate with Test technicians for making revisions/changes to relay settings as necessary.

    • Analyze post-fault event using historical data such as DFR traces, digital relay records, or related data.

    • Provide support to the Test Technicians and Operators.

    • Travel to the field may be required from time to time per project job walk or testing needs.

    Qualifications

    The essentials

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar.

    • Two (2) or more years of experience with protection, substation and/or distribution engineering in the electric utility industry or equivalent.

    The preferred

    • Master’s Degree Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in preferably ‘Power’ option.

    • Typically possesses two to five years of experience in Electrical engineering environment.

    • Demonstrated experience with Computer Aided Protection Engineering Software (CAPE), CYME, ASPEN relay database or Blue Beam.

    • Experience to interpret Standards, apply System Protection knowledge to design electrical one-line, elementary/schematics, protection logic diagrams.

    • Experience in performing system studies, symmetrical component analysis, fault calculation, and set Electromechanical Relays, SEL and GE microprocessor relays using Accelerator and URPC software

    • Experience using application software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, and Project. 

    • Possesses good communication skills, oral and written, applied to customer focus in support of appropriate identification of, and response to, client business needs.

    You should know

    • Work Mode: When a return-to-office date has been determined, this position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days.  Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California.  Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.
