Position summary

Become a(n) Senior Engineer 1, Substation Projects at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you’ll be a member of the Substation Projects - within the Substation Projects and Protection Engineering (SP&PE) group. The SP Group is responsible for the engineering and design for various substation projects and for all voltage levels (https://2.4kV up to 500kV) across all SCE’s territories. Those responsibilities include but are not limited to infrastructure replacement (planned and emergency), distribution and transmission load growth driven projects, “AA”, “A” and “B” bank additions or replacement, green filed substations build or upgrade of existing substations, in addition to external customer interconnection projects to SCE’s grid.    

The Senor Engineer 1, Substation Projects will provide both Strategic direction and day-to-day operational technical Leadership to a team of engineers within SP. The Substation Project team plays a critical role in maintaining the electrical system stability, growth and connecting renewable generation to SCE’s grid.

The Senior Engineer 1, Substation Projects will report directly to the Engineer Manager of the SP group under the Design Engineering (DE) department within T&D organization.

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

  • QA review the engineering and design of substation electrical facilities for all voltage levels (up to 500kV) substation projects and resolving technical issues associated with substation engineering.
  • Work with a diverse group of QA Engineers and Drafters to support continuous improvement initiatives, special projects, and pilot projects.
  • Provide day-to-day operational technical leadership for a team of engineers, which includes monitoring and forecasting the group’s workload, providing ongoing mentorship, coaching, and work force training and development.
  • Responsible for supporting the review of new and revised substation design standards to improve design consistency and process efficiency for substation engineering, substation engineering design contractors, and other impacted stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support to Substation Projects, Protection Engineering, QC, Substation Construction & Maintenance (SC&M), and other internal/external stakeholders.
  • Routinely interacts with the Standards group to provide day to day support to check (QA) substation design work completed internally or by the contractors.
  • Provides engineering support for on-ongoing operational needs to support service reliability and meet other related compliance requirements, such as emergent projects and/or stakeholder’s request and emergencies as well as North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) compliance and reporting.
  • Create and maintain a safety conscious work environment by leading and influencing others to follow Edison safety protocols and safe work practices.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Design Manager, Design Specification(s) & packages thru SCE internal electronic process
  • Support other engineering duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The essentials

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or bachelor’s degree in a Scientific/Technical/Math field
  • Seven (7) or more years of experience in substation engineering and design

The preferred 

  • Ten (10) years or more years of engineering experience
  • General knowledge and experience with guides, standards, codes, and methods to perform complex assignments.
  • General knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, and practices necessary to perform complex assignments for a specific discipline, various installations, or services.
  • Professional Engineer License (https://P.E.) in State of California
  • Project Management Certification
  • Experience and strong understanding of SCE’s substation design standards and specification

You should know 

This position’s work mode is hybrid.  The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.

This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
