About our group:
You will be working in the recording physics and advanced development group at Seagate recording media research center where we help understand media recording physics and design directions for further extending data storage capacity. The team works closely with the sputter team and plays a critical role in developing the next generation recording technology.
About the role - you will:
- Develop thermal and magnetic metrology to evaluate recording performance of Heat-assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) media.
- Learn characterization techniques and assist with the development of new metrology tools and support/improvement of existing characterization techniques based on pump-probe, High field VSM and High field MOKE magnetometer.
- Develop novel metrology technique to characterize key magnetic properties and its distribution, as well as thermal properties for HAMR media.
- Compare measurement results with modeling results to understand the underlying media Physics.
Interns typically work Monday thru Friday 8am to 5pm. The hours are subject to change with or without notice at the sole discretion of Seagate.
About you:
- Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD in Physics, Applied Physics Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a related field.
- Available summer 2021 starting in May or June and returning to school in the fall.
- Experience with optics, pump-probe technique, or other thermal characterizations preferred
- Experience with magnetic and/or thermal characterization preferred
- Proficient programming skills with Visual Basic, .NET, C-Sharp, or Labwindows or MatLab, Python or C++ would be strong plus.
- Proficient communication with team members.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a creative environment.
You might also have:
- Other helpful skills include: system integration, data-acquisition and instrumentation control programing skills.
- Mechanical designing with Solidworks, electronics design and modification.
