The AVP, Head of Employee Relations is responsible for leading a team of highly experienced HR professionals that support managers and employees when performance, attendance, behavioral, or other workplace issues arise. This leader sets the direction for how The Hartford handles employee issues; maintains the framework & standards of Employee Relations; and manages relationships with key partners in Employment Law, HR Compliance, Security, the Business Resilience Office, the Health Clinics and the Dept. of Investigative Services. The AVP, Head of ER is responsible for hiring, development and performance of the team as well as handling the most complex cases that need to be addressed. They oversee the development of manager capability training, the company’s response to labor charges, the investigation & resolution of employee issues, the development and application of HR Policies, and deliver reporting on a quarterly basis to business leaders and the heads of HR and Law. Additionally, this leader manages team capacity and engages in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at manager self-service. The leader of this team is a member of The Hartford’s Crisis Management team, coordinates the ER/Legal Forum, and handles ER cases for the HR department. This role will report to Head of Claims & Operations HR and Employee Relations and is based in our Hartford, CT Home office on a hybrid basis; other arrangements will be considered as appropriate.
Leads team of ER Consultants including hiring, performance management, development and building capabilities
Partner with HRBPs, TELU, Security, Investigative Services, BRO, THIP, The Hartford’s Health & Wellness Center, HR Compliance and Privacy as necessary
Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues including Executive and other sensitive case types
Provide employee relations consultation, coaching, and training to business leaders, the HR business partner for HR and to the ER Consultants as needed
Proactively identify ER trends and recommend creative solutions that aim to reduce case volume and improve the Employee Experience
Provide counsel and guidance to employees regarding application of company policies and procedures
Manage HR Policies and assist in their development, implementation and administration
Manages ERCS service delivery; ensuring appropriate staffing, resources, and processes are enabling expected ER services at or better than service level agreements and expense targets
Guide the development and maintenance of The Hartford’s ER framework and tools and promote the use of manager self-service
Qualifications
8+ years of Employee Relations or HR business partner / roles requiring client consultation and coaching, manager training & team facilitation, demand management, case management, and partnering with employment law, with a strong preference for experience at a large public company. Prior labor relations experience a plus.
Strong, motivational leader with a passion for managing and developing staff. 5+ years of leadership experience preferred.
Demonstrated creative, strategic thinking
Expert ability to lead a team & actively engage in multiple, high priority employee issues related to performance & attendance issues, behavioral issues, job modifications under the Americans with Disabilities Act, workplace violence, investigations, and terminations.
Working knowledge of case management, coaching for performance, call / case quality monitoring; experience with process improvement preferred
Strong business acumen and orientation with demonstrated solution-oriented approach to ER work
Demonstrated demand management ability to manage resource capacity model that handles multiple priorities and set effective systems in place to track and report on the work.
Acts like an owner and calmly navigates crisis situations with willingness to own tough in the moment decisions.
Proven success at building strong partnerships at all levels of the organization, and ability to understand the business needs of multiple ER stakeholders; has depth in consulting engagements influencing others to action without authority
Analyze problems, data and issues; knowledge of and ability to navigate employment law
Experience facilitating training effectively
Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills
Result-driven mindset, ability to tackle complex people issues and experience working through others
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related business degree.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$149,300 - $223,900
