    The AVP Strategy, Small Commercial & Personal Lines (AVP Strategy), is a highly visible role requiring a proven background developing multi-year segment level strategic plans that support an actionable roadmap in partnership with senior leaders and matrix partners to drive results.  This includes shaping a vision of how the business will create a differentiated experience to win in the marketplace, examining data and information, identifying patterns and trends in the market, and understanding implications and opportunities as a result. The AVP Strategy will bring innovative thinking and have the curiosity to solve problems to constantly push the boundaries. This role reports to Vice President of Strategy & Innovation for Small Commercial and Personal Lines and is based in our Hartford, CT Home Office. Remote candidates based in the Eastern half of the U.S. with the willingness and ability to travel may also be considered.

    Responsibilities:
     

    • Act as a strategist with a proven ability to bring key insights and information to collaboratively inform strategy and evaluate the success of implemented strategies.

    • Be a thought leader on challenging problems with examples of implementing innovative solutions, actions taken, and driving results.

    • Bring a deep understanding of competitor positioning and share new and innovative capabilities being developed externally that will accelerate the growth of the business.

    • Analyze The Hartford’s competitive landscape and identify strengths, weaknesses and opportunities through researching the industry thoroughly and understanding how different companies operate to assess The Hartford’s current position within the market and determine what steps we can take to improve our standing.

    • Bring critical thinking and breakthrough ideas to executive leadership in an influential manner. Leverages observations, facts, quantitative analysis, customer insights to reach thoughtful and creative decisions while executing with a sense of urgency.

    • Communicate complex insights to senior business leaders and partners in an actionable manner.

    • Lead the development of annual presentations for the head of the business to deliver to the Board of Directors about the strategic plan of the business.

    Qualifications:
     

    • 10+ years of successful experience in business strategy or consulting positions for Fortune 150/Fortune 100 companies required. In-house business strategy experience at an insurance carrier may also be considered

    • Demonstrated strong verbal/written communication and collaborative approach to work in highly matrixed and dynamic organization; understanding the needs of all partners and developing solutions that help achieve our goals. The ideal candidate is a “storyteller” who can communicate complex ideas in a cogent, crisp, succinct, and inspiring manner

    • Collaboration, Relationship-Building, and Influence: Proven ability to earn the trust of the senior leadership team by supporting their vision, while simultaneously influencing their vision as a thought partner; builds effective relationships internally and externally

    • Challenger: Ability to challenge conventional wisdom, including challenge current business model, but to do so collaboratively and in a way that drives buy-in across the organization. This includes both having a strong point-of-view, and asking for, listening to, and synthesizing input from multiple stakeholders

    • Risk management mindset to identify potential challenges and develop strategies for overcoming them, including predicting obstacles that could affect our success

    • Innovative thinking and intellectual curiosity to understand internal and external business factors

    • Proven leadership experience, including the ability to grow, mentor, and manage a diverse mix of talent

    • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred

    Compensation

    The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

    $160,960 - $241,440
